L'Avventura dated? WTF?

I need to check out Salo, maybe...probably not really, though.

I don't, not with 5 or 6 previous versions already having been released. The average consumer isn't going to double dip.

Prime has paid for itself a few times over this year.

Thumbs up

Mr. Payne chose films from before I was born (though 3 of them were from 1977, and that's only a year before me). His films are generally sociopolitical satires, and no doubt the movies he chose in the Criterion closet were also mostly sociopolitical. Excellent director.

Instead of E-mailing Criterion with suggestions for release, I'm going to propose an annual contest that allows one lucky Criterion fan a chance to hit that closet...I NEED to hit that closet!!!

Have you seen Narnia? It's a bit like that mysterious wardrobe. People often get lost in there.

I'd recommend you take someone with you and while you're in there might as well have yourself a little picnic.

There no monsters or evil witches, but every so often Mulvaney might tryna scare you off.

A bit of fun, I suppose. Directors (and select others) stop by the Criterion office and get to root around the fabled closet and (apparently) take home whatever they want. The lucky "shopper" usually comments on his or her selection, and some are more erudite than others. Seems a bit strange sometimes that they don't already own a title they wax lyrically about, but there you go.

B&N said they couldn't consider my order lost until the last day of expected delivery, 12/7. It's now 10pm 12/7 and they still refuse to consider it lost until tomorrow...despite the other two thirds of the same shipment, that went out at the same time, arriving a week ago.

And once they do consider it lost (which happens with 99% of Asendia shipments, apparently) they still won't send me the movies I've paid for, they'll just give me a refund and make me re-order them.

Amazon it is.

The cynical answer is, a bunch of filmmakers and celebs, who have enough money to buy every title in the collection many times over, are allowed to root through the collection and pick what they want while talking about the movies. Then Criterion gets to namecheck them on their website, social media, etc. (I'm assuming they get to keep the titles gratis - does anyone know if these people are paid appearance fees for making these videos?)

What amazes me is the large amount of them who take the DVD copy instead of the blu-ray.

I have always thought that any paid membership that entitles you to future discounts is pretty suspect, but the Prime membership does give you access to a streaming library, as well. I don't know how the library compares to Netflix streaming, but at $99 / 12 months, it is actually cheaper than Netflix and has (I think) 15 or 20 movies streaming in 4K. ..and then the shipping benefits, too

As much as I want Red Beard I think Stray Dog or Drunken Angel would benefit more from HD. Either way I feel its been awhile since we got a Kurosawa Blu from Criterion.

Above all else I wish Criterion could get Ran back from Studiocanal

I can't wait to see Downsizing ... the trailer looks both fun and absurd.

Although, the story does seem interesting and it has some of my favorite actors ... so that's an added bonus.
