Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'm not sure where the best place is to pick up new copies so I just added a bunch of movies to my Amazon shopping list and will slowly chip away over time. I don't remember much about my time in college but I do remember renting a lot of these movies from Hollywood Video when I was in my early 20's and it will be fun to revisit those and catch up on all the classics I never saw.

Edit: I noticed that I needed to spend $275 at Best Buy in order to his Elite Plus status for the year so I went ahead and ordered nine movies. Man, I had just got caught up on buying all the UHDs I wanted and thought "now I can have a break." Instead I have replaced one addiction with another. Oh well. Better than being addicted to smack. I'll at least try to wait for sales before buying more.

Barnes & Noble holds Criterion sales twice a year (July and November) where titles are 50% off, and Criterion's website has 24-hour flash sales a couple times a year where titles are 50% off as well. And at any given time Amazon may have certain Criterion titles on sale, it's good to keep a lookout from time to time.

Any recommendations of 4-5 movies to start with? I'm completely open to films from any place and time. Mostly just looking to broaden my horizons. And thanks again in advance for any responses.
Chaplin, I only own two (Gold Rush and Modern Times) I'd recommend either of those or Great Dictator if you don't want a silent film

Dazed and Confused is also a favorite of mine

Ghost World is also enjoyable

I'd also recommend some Kubrick and 4 of his titles are Criterion The Killing (which features earlier Kubrick film Killer's Kiss as a bonus feature), Paths of Glory, Dr. Strangelove, and Barry Lyndon all are good, The Killing is my personal favorite but I know others may disagree

well, you've got a great TV on which to explore. I can't believe how great some films look on that set - particularly black and white films.

Just watched Dead Presidents. Man I really wish Criterion still had the rights to this criminally underrated film.

I would have to agree with you there on that one, Owl. The opening scene of Season Two ( the one between Dale Cooper and the elderly room-service waiter) perfectly foreshadows the content of these wildly fun episodes.

By the way, the waiter in the aforementioned scene was played by Hank Worden. Hank Worden made his claim to fame as Mose Harper in John Ford's The Searchers.

Is there any indication Criterion may release Bad Timing on blu-ray? I'm so tempted to nab it for £7 at Amazon UK.

I was looking at movies on ebay and noticed the one movie missing from my Kubrick collection Spartacus was once a Criterion release. Any chance they can get the rights back to this one?

Hey does anyone know if there's any word on The Devil and Daniel Webster, Heaven Can Wait (1943), Julius Caesar (1953) or The Fugitive Kind?

My wishlist for Criterion would be:

Any remaining Scorsese's not on blu: Who's That Knocking at My Door?; Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore; After Hours; Bringing Out the Dead. (It's rumored they're re-issuing Mean Streets, as well).

Blue Collar (Paul Schrader)

Of course, the ever-elusive The Devils (Ken Russell) (Not likely, I know)

Cruising (William Friedkin)

Klute (Alan J. Pakula)

Fingers (James Toback ; REALLY not likely, now)

Upgrades of Mishima (Paul Schrader) and Bad Timing (Nicholas Roeg)

Dersu Uzala (Kurosawa)

Silence (Scorsese; re-issue)

California Split (Robert Altman)

Pasolini films (Teorema, Accatone, etc.)

Bertolucci films (Before the Revolution, Tragedy of a Ridiculous Man, etc.)

Pretty Baby and Atlantic City (Louis Malle)

Oh, I could go on and on....
