It's ridiculous, to me, that one of the Hollywood's greatest pairs is so criminally underrepresented on blu-ray.
Ironic you should say that. I was just about to ask if any of the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers Musicals will ever make it to the collection. I know they're all on Filmstruck which Criterion has connections to, and I know they did one of their musicals before WAY back on Lazerdisc.

Pretty much not having all their films, Roman Holiday, and The Abyss available is the biggest holes in the overall Blu-ray catalog.

Roman Holiday is the one I can't understand to save my life. I mean I'm no expert but every time I've watched it on TCM it looks like the source material is of good quality.

It’s Paramount, Jake.

I’m glad now that I never got around to buying the Sony blu. Will pick this one up, for sure. Another movie I’d like to see Criterion do is In the Company of Men. The Sony DVD is out of print.

I'd definitely be down for "In the Company of Men". It's a brutally scathing film. I have the Sony DVD and it looks absolutely awful now. It's nearly 20 years old.

I'd love a Neil LaBute "Humanity Really Sucks" box set with In The Company Of Men, Your Friends & Neighbors and The Shape Of Things.

I kinda scanned through the titles and I might be interested, but like I said, I know nothing.
I haven't seen any of her early films. I watched Witness for the Prosecution for the first time recently, and thoroughly enjoyed it - and her performance.

A couple of other of her films I've watched over the past year or so are Hitchcock's Stage Fright (unfortunately, not yet on BD), and No Highway in the Sky with James Stewart. The latter was a blind buy in a Kino Lorber sale and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

^ There's a good one on TCM this Sunday night: Shanghai Express

It's been years since I've seen it, but I remember it being a lot of fun to watch. And Marlene looks fantastic in it. As for it getting a release from Criterion or elsewhere...

It shouldn't be difficult to have either movies get a criterion release........right?

Roman Holiday is a baffling omission, for sure. I would add Ordinary People as another curious hole in the overall catalog. It’s the only modern Best Picture winner that hasn’t had a high definition release yet. Robert Redford’s work, both in front of and behind the camera, is still quite popular with Sundance, and one would think the recent passing of Mary Tyler Moore would have boosted demand for one of her best dramatic roles.

As for The Abyss, I’m not sure what the long delay is. I’ve seen a great number of people petitioning for a release of both it and True Lies, which might be my favorite Schwarzenegger flick. At the very least, it’s on par with the first two Terminator films.

I’ve got Roman Holidayon my DVR, and will watch it tonight. It was recorded from TCM, and it’s definitely in high definition.

I’m about 45 minutes into Roman Holiday, and the picture quality is fine. No damage I can see to the film elements. My only complaint is that the copy TCM uses is a tad dark.

Audrey Hepburn looks ridiculously gorgeous in this.

I believe the reason "Ordinary People" hasn't had a Blu (or even a decent Special Edition DVD) is Redford. I don't want to make it sound like he disapproves of things, just that he is apparently too busy to go back to his catalog titles and approve of the releases. I mean, I know it being at Paramount certainly doesn't help, but I think at least some of it is on Redford.

/u/herky140 on Reddit made Criterion Covers for all the Best Picture nominees (plus Florida Project). They're amazing.

I was thinking the same thing. We see more of the deer in that picture than we do in the film. But kudos for the creativity, nonetheless.

I was thinking it was more about
[Show spoiler]the taxidermy deer head that’s in the “preparation room” near the end of the film, not only the car accident. Idk, the deer imagery is pretty central to the themes of the film.

I think the teacup might be a better isolated image; the deer head is cool, but to me it doesn't particularly evoke "Get Out" over, say, "Evil Dead II".

The "Darkest Hour" one, that is a dead ringer for a Criterion release.
