Saw Topsy-Turvy last night (finished this morning) on a Criterion DVD passed on by a friend that upgraded to the blu. I wouldn't have thought that Mike Leigh with his penchant for contemporary working class British bittersweet dramas / comedies (Naked, Secrets & Lies, Life is Sweet) would have been an apt choice for a lush period piece about Gilbert & Sullivan, the acclaimed music theater duo that preceded Rodgers and Hammerstein. But Topsy Turvy is a colorful fun romp that looks at the partnership, as well as the individual lives of the writer-composer duo of numerous comic operas. Writer Gilbert (a wonderfully controlled Jim Broadbent) is given perhaps a little more center-stage with attention paid to his constant self-doubt and easily injured ego, but composer Sullivan (Allan Corduner), with his bohemian lifestyle and aspirations of more profound artistry, also comes across well. These two stalwarts are buoyed up by a wonderful supporting cast, many of who play the actors of the theater troupe they work for. Leigh favorite Timothy Spall gives another terrific turn as the actor Richard Temple (playing in a kimono the lead of their popular Japanese flavored opera The Mikado). This musical looks and sounds wonderful, and while it might be guilty of hinting rather than probing into the darker side of the theater world, it remains a warm-hearted charming enterprise, and gorgeous to boot. This goes to my blu-ray wishlist

Tried to watch Tom Jones today. Blind bought it. Made it about 45 mins and turned it off. This was not for me at all. Hopefully I can sell it quickly.

I would also keep A Brighter Summer Day. Aside from what the others have said it's worth noting the commentary track by Tony Rayns is phenomenal.

"Tom Jones" is a good film, not great. I think a lot of people, given that it's a BP winner (although a lot of recent BP winners are complete shit), expect a masterpiece, but it's basically a lighthearted farce. The early Albert Finney film that is a masterpiece IMO is "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning".

Janus Films tweeted a still from Fallen Angels a couple of days ago.
![]() It's not a solid indication of an upcoming release, but it has been rumored. ![]() |

Judging from the Janus website, it appears that Belle de Jour and several Bergman titles (if not all) will be re-released, too. |

Speaking of cartoon clues which I am sure you have seen a new one this week...today I was thinking about one that had a bowl of soup with the letters “E”, “R”, “M”, “A”, and “N”, arranged in some strange way that the most inept of fans can actually make out the word RAMEN. The bowl of soup would have the letters 4K written on it.

![]() As for Tom Jones, haven't seen it but from what I've read about it yeah I am surprised it won based purely on the kind of film it is. That year wasn't great for nominees though. However, there were great films that weren't even nominated: The Great Escape, Charade, The Birds, 8½, The Leopard, Contempt, High and Low, The Silence, etc. |
