Probably because of Bowling for Columbine. Look at all the controversy it stirred up in this thread alone.

![]() ![]() Stephen Hawking was brilliant, complex, and yet flawed as we all are. I feel I would be remiss if I did not recommend Errol Morris' extraordinary documentary A Brief History of Time after the passing of Stephen Hawking, a man whose wondrous curiosity, intelligence, and refusal to let a crippling disease prevent him from exploring the mysteries of the universe made him such an incredible inspiration to me, personally. I first read A Brief History of Time as a sophomore in college, just a few years after it was published. I've read it twice since. Professor Hawkings' uncanny ability to demystify the most complex scientific theories and mathematical equations, while infusing his wicked sense of humor, makes for a completely engrossing read. Morris' documentary does not delve quite as deeply into the science that made the world renowned theoretical physicist famous, but it does disseminate the broader brushstrokes of his work in a way that a layperson can easily understand. It makes for a fascinating look into his life. Some have tried to paint Professor Hawking as an iconoclast, of sorts; they attack his writings that attempted to show how the universe came to be, and could exist absent of Providence. In this, Hawking was misunderstood. "God may exist," Hawking told Larry King in an interview after the release of The Grand Design, "but science can explain the universe without the need for a creator." Though his body became a prison, Hawking was able to continue his work thanks in no small part to advances in technology, and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Morris' film shows how this brilliant but flawed man was able to defy insurmountable odds. While a student at Oxford in 1963, Stephen Hawking was given two years to live when diagnosed with ALS. He beat that estimate by more than five decades, continuing his work well into his seventies. |

I only saw Grand Budapest a couple weeks back, but I very much enjoyed it. I feel it's a little more accessible than some of his other ones, and I do believe it received broader appeal than his others too. |

Agreed. His films are just a horrible as Moore’s. His films plus Tiny Furniture are way worse than Criterion releasing Armageddon. At least parts of that film are mildly entertaining cause Bruce Willis is the man and Liv was still super hot.
