I was going to comment "nothing for me in June" but oh well.
That's probably why they turned it off.

I'm picking up Virgin Spring and El Sur. I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't know that film before today, but after looking it up I'm definitely fascinated. It looks beautiful and sounds very interesting.

Richard, cheer up. It's their loss.

Nothing for me in June would actually make a great novel title.

Probably because of Bowling for Columbine. Look at all the controversy it stirred up in this thread alone.

Stephen Hawking was brilliant, complex, and yet flawed as we all are.

I feel I would be remiss if I did not recommend Errol Morris' extraordinary documentary A Brief History of Time after the passing of Stephen Hawking, a man whose wondrous curiosity, intelligence, and refusal to let a crippling disease prevent him from exploring the mysteries of the universe made him such an incredible inspiration to me, personally. I first read A Brief History of Time as a sophomore in college, just a few years after it was published. I've read it twice since. Professor Hawkings' uncanny ability to demystify the most complex scientific theories and mathematical equations, while infusing his wicked sense of humor, makes for a completely engrossing read. Morris' documentary does not delve quite as deeply into the science that made the world renowned theoretical physicist famous, but it does disseminate the broader brushstrokes of his work in a way that a layperson can easily understand. It makes for a fascinating look into his life.

Some have tried to paint Professor Hawking as an iconoclast, of sorts; they attack his writings that attempted to show how the universe came to be, and could exist absent of Providence. In this, Hawking was misunderstood. "God may exist," Hawking told Larry King in an interview after the release of The Grand Design, "but science can explain the universe without the need for a creator."

Though his body became a prison, Hawking was able to continue his work thanks in no small part to advances in technology, and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Morris' film shows how this brilliant but flawed man was able to defy insurmountable odds. While a student at Oxford in 1963, Stephen Hawking was given two years to live when diagnosed with ALS. He beat that estimate by more than five decades, continuing his work well into his seventies.

Yeah, I decided early on not to touch that whole fiasco with a ten foot pole. It was fairly obvious where it was headed.

LOL! That's hilarious, and I'm not even a Wes Anderson fan.

P.S.: Though I have been considering an attempt to re-assess his work. Maybe next month in the challenge or something.

His work seems to be pretty polarizing. I enjoy most of his films. I feel like there's so much creativity, and visual craftsmanship in the way they're constructed. They almost feel like homemade movies done with a bigger budget, and top-shelf actors in a sense. I think some just find them overly pretentious, or artsy, or that the humor just isn't their thing, which is fine.

I only saw Grand Budapest a couple weeks back, but I very much enjoyed it. I feel it's a little more accessible than some of his other ones, and I do believe it received broader appeal than his others too.

It was surprisingly civil for the most part there for a while. Well, one day.

Yeah, I just am not sure that the little of his work that I've seen was given a fair shake by me. Also, a lot of the people around here who I see praising his work have a number of opinions with which I find myself agreeing with on a regular basis.

Everyone deserves a second chance.

That is indeed surprising. I'm still deciding whether or not I will pick it up. I think it's well-done and worth owning, but right now I've got a lot of purchases -- Criterion and otherwise -- coming up. It may have to wait.

I got out of this thread about an hour after the announcements went up. I honestly wasn't expecting that kind of vitriol.

You're right. His films are hot sellers for Criterion.

Agreed. His films are just a horrible as Moore’s. His films plus Tiny Furniture are way worse than Criterion releasing Armageddon. At least parts of that film are mildly entertaining cause Bruce Willis is the man and Liv was still super hot.
