Considering that the UK blu is from Studio Canal, it's likely that the film is out of bounds for Criterion. The UK release IS quite terrific IMO (with a damn good transfer - although some people have made remarks about digital noise - and great extras, lovely booklet), so unless you are region-locked, you should opt for it.

Edit: There is also a 2017 Japanese region A blu-ray based on the same master.

I didn't even know that some of the foreign films have English dubs placed on the disc. Should give them a try once, at least for giggles.

One can only hope. Farrah Fawcett and Joan Collins are both woefully underrepresented in the Collection; it would be nice to think Criterion is actively seeking to remedy that.

Playtime also has an alternate soundtrack that contains more English, but this is mostly redundant as the film has very little dialogue.

I should also mention that there is a variant where the English film contains an FOREIGN audio track! Down by Law contains a French dub, the reason why is beyond me.

It's funny, for all the examples dwk found, "La Strada" was the only one I could think of when I posted my response, but I knew there were others. (I know this because my mother loves that movie but hates subtitles, so I have watched the disc at least once with her dubbed. I justified it because it's Italian, so even the Italian track is ADRed anyway.)

They both have the film in English DTS-HD MA 5.1, with a commentary by Michael Mann and James Caan and a theatrical trailer. On top of that, the exclusives to each are:

Criterion:
- Interview with director Michael Mann (24:18)
- Interview with actor James Caan (10:39)
- "Tangerine Dream" interview with Johannes Schmoelling (15:40)

Arrow:
- "The Directors: Michael Mann" 2001 documentary on the filmmaker, containing interviews with Mann, James Belushi, William Petersen, Jon Voight and others (59:28)
- "Stolen Dreams" interview with Caan, filmed exclusively for this release (14:32)
- "Hollywood USA: James Caan" episode of the French TV series Ciné Regards (24:38)
- "The Art of the Heist" an examination of Thief with writer and critic F.X. Feeney, author of the Taschen volume on Michael Mann (66:29)

EDIT: The Arrow version also has an LPCM 2.0 stereo track for the film, and an isolated music and effects track. Plus it has both the theatrical and director's cuts, whilst the Criterion only has the director's cut.

The theatrical cut was exclusive to the LE which is no longer in print.

Arrow has superior encoding and likely to be cheaper to import. Unless any of the Criterion extras particularly sway you, get the Arrow.

Ah yes, good point. In which case it's just between the extras posted - both have exclusives, although the Arrow has a greater amount of content.

If you're looking for alternate cuts, the German version has both *and* the '90's cut (on a DVD), and all the bonus features from the Arrow release. (But it's a lot more expensive.)
