I rather like it, it has a very forties look, a bit like the cover of an old pulp science fiction magazine.

I saw the DCP a few months ago. It's a good transfer, but it's definitely not from pristine elements. There is damage in several places, so adjust your expectations accordingly.

This is also going to make it tougher to nail down titles for the July sale. There's also a bunch of films I want to get such as:

The Asphalt Jungle

Anatomy of a Murder
The Awful Truth
There are some Goddard films
La Dolce Vita
Elevator to the Gallows
The remaining Lloyd films
Gilda
His Girl Friday
Good Morning
The silent Ozu Eclipse sets
A Touch of Zen

- It might be Christmas before I can get all of the films I want.

I'm very excited for another Powell & Pressburger film, and since I've never seen A Matter of Life and Death, I'm pretty excited about it. And I'm all in for the Dietrich & von Sternberg in Hollywood set, as well as sex, lies, and videotape. Thank God these'll be half-off.

I imagine business will be quite good at Barnes & Noble with these titles hitting the shelves while the sale's going on.

Definitely an excellent month.

I think I'm in for everything except Bull Durham.

The von Sternberg boxset has got to be the best release of all time.

Brilliant news that A Matter of Life and Death is coming. Day one for me. I'll also likely get sex, lies, and videotape on sale, as I didn't pick up the Sony release.

I fail to see what's so exciting about Criterion releasing Bull Durham or Sex, Lies and Videotape, since these are already available on blu-ray.

Yeah, I'm struggling now to know what films to get during the sale since I have a bunch of films I want to get. I know already that I'm getting the Von Sternberg set.

Good Lord, Criterion is on fire in July. I especially want Sex, Lies and Videotape, the Dietrich box set and A Matter of Life and Death.

Worst announcements in a while for me, but the question still remains: why Bull Durham? Why is it worthy of inclusion?

Or has this already been discussed?

They've littered in some garbage lately.

Hah. Snobbery about a middlebrow Costner/Shelton film. Now I've heard it all!

We'll make a deal: i'll develop 'better taste in movies' and you start using your imagination a bit more.

Because if you think Bull Durham is worthy of inclusion over all of the other potential great films that could be in the Criterion Collection, I'd say you are more likely to have a problem with film appreciation than me.

Bull Durham is quite beloved. I've only seen it once, theatrically, and I found it to be just decent. I was very, very young at the time though.

Still, kind of weird to question its inclusion, as many people consider it one of the better sports movies.

Plus, didn't it essentially launch the careers of Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, while continuing the forward momentum of Costner's hot career trajectory at the time?

It's the Sports Illustrated #1 Greatest Sports movie of all time which, depending on your point of view, is either exactly why it is worthy of inclusion in the Criterion Collection or exactly why it isn't.
