I've hit Amazon and WOW a couple of times for Criterions since the last sale. International shipping + no membership makes the extra couple of dollars not really worth it.

Funny. Now they've started automatic renewal.

My membership ended last summer, and I didn't renew because I knew I wouldn't spend enough in the next year to justify it. But if that rumored Bergman box turns out to be as large as some people seem to think it will be, I'd probably wind up renewing to buy that, since it would likely pay for itself in one go and then the rest of the year is a bonus. Also, my "local" B&N is near my office, which is closing down, which come to think of it I guess I earned via irony, after all the time I've spent talking about how imminent B&N closing is.

Apologies if this has been asked before, but is there any chance that Melville's Le Deuxieme Souffle is likely to be upgrade to Blu-Ray anytime soon? Can't seem to find a Blu-Ray release anywhere and I'm wondering if I should just cave and buy it on DVD.

I went on a Melville marathon a month or two ago, running through the SC boxset and watching this, "La Silence de la Mer" and "Le Samourai". What a master he was. Definitely in my top 10 directors of all-time. The DVD of "Le Deuxieme Souffle" is one of the better looking DVDs I've seen. But it's one that needs a BD, so we can have a definitive edition. Criterion has so many DVDs to upgrade that it's a fool's errand to guess what they will upgrade next, but it's among my most wanted upgrades along with "The Ruling Class" and "Secret Honor" and a few others.

Just saw HANAGATAMI, the latest film from Nobuhiko Ôbayashi, what a ride! It's a huge pity that no films from him other than House ever got blu-ray releases outside Japan, he deserves much better than this!

I can't believe it took five years to get another Powell/Pressburger film.

An HD master of it exists; it's one of the titles Criterion has in HD on iTunes (and maybe FilmStruck?). However, that doesn't mean too much - I picked up Mishima in HD on iTunes at the end of 2013, and it's only now they're about to release a (completely different, 4K-restored) blu-ray. Maybe they might hope to get licenses for Le cercle rouge, Léon Morin and Army of Shadows back before doing a Melville set?

Does it usually take B&N a while to upload new films? I can't see the Dietrich set up yet there. I just want to put it on a wishlist in preparation for the sale

It's a pity that many of the Melville films aren't available in the US. I had the chance to watch Le cercle rouge on TCM a couple months ago and loved it. For me, it was right up there with Le Samourai.

Do you think Isle of Dogs will go straight to Criterion or will there be a wait like with Grand Budapest?

I agree for the most part. There are some positively bizarre posters in which the image seems to bear absolutely no relation to the film. There are some great exceptions. For example, last year I was finally able to track down a copy of this poster for one of my favourite films:

Well this is just depressing, especially Kiarostami after his recent passing. Wasn't there a rumor of a boxset or am I dreaming?

Also, how many titles of the above are they actually capable of putting out? I can't keep up with rights and what not as much as some of you here. There's at least 5 Kurosawa DVDs that haven't been upgraded (not counting Eclipse).

We really need a blu upgrade for Kurosawa. Drunken Angel or The Bad Sleep Well would be my pick.

Also, has there been any news about the supposed Godzilla boxset? Really hoping for that soon.

That's good to hear, hopefully sooner rather than later.
