Looking forward to seeing Smithereens, have heard good things but never got around to seeing it. Haven't seen Tree of Life either, seems like it'd be smarmy so I haven't bothered.

You know, looking at that cover, the way it's arranged - I wonder if it's some kind of lenticular cover. I'm mezzo-mezzo on the design, but it would make a lot more sense if the cover had some sort of treatment like that.

First of all, I was being a very sincere and sweet gentleman, but a question came up regarding theater etiquette. Most women I've talked to would come up with a sarcastic or cynical response, but there was something truly wrong that an ethical question like this, about treating other people with respect and consideration, would be met with such hostility and ignorance. Mind you, we were never planning on meeting for a first date at a movie theater, but as I continued to get to know her, I realized she and I were not the right match. It was a dealbreaker for her, not me, that apparently holding hands or making out publicly in a movie theater is not something I've done or used to doing with dates or friends or whomever I'm with. Maybe some of us prefer to have space. To each their own. But its not fair to judge me so harshly based on the fact that I'm an ungrateful snob when it comes to movie-watching. I don't think I am. I just like when people respect others, including me. This woman seemed to be quite unstable, she was coming out of a traumatic divorce, and she seemed to have major trust issues with men in general, even assuming if "I'm an axe murderer" or not. I personally do not like when certain people always assume every man is out to rape or murder them. Not every man is a rapist or murderer. This was a woman who needed to be persuaded that "men in general can be good humans". This was another red flag. Call it "daddy issues" if you want, but this wasn't a woman who seemed very easygoing. I was absolutely reasonable and if this person wouldn't have been so suspicious and fearful, this might have been a good first date.

Furthermore, I just found out at the time (a month ago) that my dad has Cancer, and not only does he have Cancer, but he has just a few months left to live. Perhaps my mind wasn't right, perhaps I wasn't in a jolly merry mood, perhaps I had a lot of distractions on my end. But knowing my dad's Esophageal Cancer spread not only to his bones, but his lymph nodes and his liver did not really help my mood at the time. I didn't need to be around a woman who assumed I was a murderer. I believe there are SOME women out there who don't go walking around with such thoughts on a constant basis, but perhaps I'm wrong (though I don't think I am). So yeah, that's the story.

Next time, before tearing me a new a$$hole, I'll make sure to be a bit less blunt and a bit more candid. Thanks.
Dig it....

hi there,

thanks for writing. The tree of life blu-ray release is in a cardboard digipak and the dvd release is in a plastic case. Both the dvd and blu-ray have the same content. I hope this is helpful! Please feel free to write again with additional questions.

All the best,

I haven't dated in a couple years since my GF and I got together, but first dates broke down for me like this. There's a 25% chance it's going to be awesome, there's a 50% chance it's going to be kind of blah, and there's a 25% chance it's going to be incredibly awful. My girlfriend and I actually met at a bookstore and talked for nearly an hour before I asked her out, so we pretty much knew we'd hit it off.

My most memorable date was with this absolutely beautiful girl who could honestly drink Richard Burton or Oliver Reed under the table. First date, we went out to dinner, had two bottles of wine, then went bar-hopping, went to multiple parties, and, even as an experienced drinker, I thought, "Damn, this girl is RELENTLESS!" I was like, "Can't we go back to my place and chill for a bit?" She goes, "No, we need to hit up some more bars." We went on a few more dates after that and then it kind of fizzled, to my relief in all honesty. As much as I liked her in many ways, she was going to drive me into AA.

Kind of wish Criterion had decided to start with UHD with The Tree of Life to make justice to those 65mm shots, because otherwise I don't think it will ever happen, oh well, I still wonder when and which will be their first UHD release.

I don't think any boutique label is going UHD. I think the labels are doing calculations and figuring that BD is the end of the line for physical for most people. I'd rather Criterion focus on releasing lower-profile films on BD than trying to acquire higher-profile films to release on UHD, in all honesty. I'm to the point where I'm absolutely done with re-releases, they bore the shit out of me 99.9% of the time, and just want stuff released from VHS/non-anamorphic DVD prison.

I remember not liking that bit of Moonrise Kingdom at all! People I can watch be blown up, machine gunned and generally unpleasant things happen to in movies (not in real life I hasten to add) but don't hurt the dogs!

The only film I've nearly gone off was Romper Stomper. Just by the opening scene made me feel immediately queasy. I won't spoil too much for those who haven't seen the film, but it's certainly a provocative piece of work.

As for killing dogs, I'm OK. Kill anything you want. Just don't poke the eyes, cut off the 'nads, or pull out teeth. That's a no-no.

I know I'm still very much in the minority of the market, but it really feels like a shame to be doing all these 4K restorations and not releasing them on UHD blu-rays. Surely it's worth Criterion dipping their toe in that water?

I can't imagine how good a 4K HDR copy of Tree of Life with an atmos track would be.

The Tree of Life is my favorite film of the century, so I'm ecstatic over its inclusion. But, and I'm not one to usually do this.. that cover art is abysmal. It's a Malick film. Just take a still shot and variate it slightly, a la The Thin Red Line. Don't do this Tumblr fan edit crap.

Anyways, just a minor aside. Cannot wait for this release. Also nice to see Heaven Can Wait. More Gene Tierney on blu is always a good thing.

What's a more acceptable world view in your opinion?

I'm not baiting just curious to know your thoughts.

Memories of Underdevelopment and Ballad of G. Cortez are films I haven't heard of before that sound very interesting to me. I really doubt I'll be interested in picking up Tree of Life, since I already own the Fox disc and am not enthused about MORE footage.

Heaven Can Wait and Ballad of Gregorio Cortez will be the ones for me in this month.

It's amazing to me that Malick either has lovers or haters...doesn't seem many are middle of the road with his body of work.

The new art for Memories of Underdevelopment and The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez are definite upgrades. One can make the argument for Heaven Can Wait, but I'll always be partial to those red-lettered original posters with tons of text.
