I hope so. It was so disappointing when the last release was a DVD only. Never understood why this film is so ignored. Even with the studio forced cut it's an amazing film and deserves to be in HD.

Now if someone would just find that rumored uncut work print that was sent to Orson in Brazil.

We can always get them on e-bay, but we are going to be paying a premium

It's a sad day for Aussie movie collectors. We are screwed.

Couldn’t you just befriend a Criterion enthusiast in the States to buy for you, and then ship to Australia? Yes, it would require some trust and patience.

What am I missing here?

There are potentially a few ways around it, but none of the suggestions are remotely convenient.

As for your option, I really wouldn't want to be a burden. I'm sure most people have better things to do with their limited time than to bother with that, especially over the medium term.

I enjoyed The Magnificent Ambersons, but think it’s one of those films that will require additional viewings before I can truly appreciate it. Everything I’ve seen from Orson Welles, behind or in front of the camera, has left me thinking for days, and eager to re-examine in much greater detail.

My understanding is that the cut scene footage was destroyed by RKO, and Welles’ original work print is lost (or, am I confusing A Touch of Evil here?); I thought only Welles’ editing notes survive.

I certainly hope that somewhere out there, an unmolested copy of TMA exists, even if it is a rough cut. Seeing the film as Welles intended would be like finding the Holy Grail for classic film lovers.

Touch of Evil has been re-assembled into several different cuts.

Shit, I only just realised that the new Australian tax laws might end up affecting B&N too, which would basically end my Criterion buying forever as I usually can only afford them during the sale because of shipping costs.

And Amazon UK not allowing orders would also potentially affect a bunch of UK publishers. I would hope that Eureka and Indicator and Studio Canal and the others would still allow orders directly from their site.

There are some theories that it's an excuse to try and push their Australian site, which hasn't taken off particularly well.

There are alternatives - Elevator to the Gallows just dropped on WowHD and I pulled the trigger immediately - but Amazon is usually the best outside of sale times, price-wise. And B&N keeps losing international shipments.

I would be freaking gutted if I were in their shoes. Hell, I was pissed enough when Amazon bumped their super saver shipping minimum from $25 to $35

UNLESS all those companies that use for fulfillment or are owned by ALLIANCE are treated as a single entity.

Either I don't understand the new law or I'm not understanding Amazon's position since I thought they were pre-collecting Customs Fees for many countries already. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what Amazon does for many shipments to Canada, UK, Fr, and Germany. AmazonUS now automatically collects and distributes Sales Tax to individual States in the US which seems to be far more complicated given all the state and local variations than collecting a flat rate GST for AUS shipments
Customs fees and import taxes are typically levied in addition to any domestic sales tax, and vary enormously from country to country. Amazon doesn't collect them.

As I understand it, Amazon refused to collect AUS GST on behalf of the Australian Government, hence the decision to block orders. Understandable in many respects, as it would set a precedent for overseas-based online retailers, and open the flood gates for every other country on earth to make Amazon and others responsible for revenue collection.

What it all boils down to is the long-held desire of governments and jurisdictions the world over to regulate the Internet and generate revenue.
