The camera movements struck me as extraneous. Very little outside of Phillip Baker Hall's commitment to the role struck me as interesting. But most of all I don't find there to be much "Secret Honor" or humanity to Phillip Baker Hall's Nixon. Altman reduces him to a rambling lunatic.

Malakaheso didn't, but (s)he wouldn't like it if it weren't visually interesting.

Then again, I'm probably in the minority in that I don't believe that Altman made a great film after the 1970's.
I know my tastes are not normal but I thought MASH was just ok ( I don't own it) and the only Altman movie I truly love is Brewster McCloud. I think Criterion will release this someday and I can't wait....

I couldn't agree with you more about Brewster McCloud needing a release. Do you believe as I do that it is probably an inevitable Criterion release, like Lolita or Elephant Man?

I don’t think it’s inevitable, but it could happen. Warner Archive has released it on DVD, so either they’ll release it on Blu-ray themselves, never do anything with it, or give it to Criterion (which they’ve never done before in terms of Warner Archive DVD-only titles.)

My top 5 favorite post-70s Altmans are Vincent & Theo, Popeye, Short Cuts, The Player and Prairie Home Companion. I like a few more, so I guess I'm sort of in the bag for Altman.
I'm in that same bag. I dont' really like Popeye, but I'm with you on the other choices. I also like Ready to Wear and The Company. Hit me haters, but I can't figure out why I feel so satisified at the end of both those films.

And a special plug for Prairie Home Companion. He was at the end of his life with that one, but he was still in control of his filmmaking. And then there's the ending.

I don't think "The Company" gets enough credit either. Not on par with his '70's stuff, but I think it deserves to be considered on the good side of his latter day revival.

Criterion still has to get "California Split" out, so I'm hoping Archive handles "Brewster" itself. At this point, I'm not sure how much could be done to create special features for it anyway, I just want it in HD.

I love Robin Williams and Shelly Duvall but to me Popeye was unwatchable. I don't even think I made it to the 30 minute mark.....

I'll admit Popeye is a strange new. If I were being more objective I'd put The Company or maybe Gosford Park in that slot. I simply find Popeye super idiosyncratic fun.

Neve Campbell's really good films from that era seem to have been forgotten. When will I be Loved, The Company, Panic. It's a shame Scream and Wild Things are the only things people have remembered her in. :/

"Fool For Love", those are boring visuals.

I can remember a time when any list of Altman's best post 70's work was guaranteed to include "Cookie's Fortune" but I guess that's been out of print long enough to go back to being underrated. Once somebody gets the rights to put out the blu in America, I think people will be reminded again.
I have the German BD of "Cookie's Fortune". I like the film quite a bit, but I do tend to forget about it. I think of it as his latter-day version of "A Wedding" in terms of tone.

COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME is my favorite post-70's Altman. My vote for his least appreciated film is A PERFECT COUPLE (which may have been his last film from the seventies.

As guamguy mentioned, I think the best chance for BM is Warner Archive. The DVD looks quite good, but it is a DVD-R, so a BD would be great. I love that batshit crazy film.

Criterion Titles I would like to see

If there were any titles I'd like to see released by Criterion on Blu-ray, it would be these: a stand-alone Blu-ray release of THE LAST PICTURE SHOW (1971), and the 4K restorations of IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT (1967) and ANNIE HALL (1977).

The Heat of the Night could be a possibility I think. Kino stated they were outbid at the last moment

I always held out on getting Heat of the Night in the wish Criterion releases it.

A new, 4K resto of In the Heat of the Night released by Criterion would be a dream come true. I refuse to buy the current BD because every screencap I've seen makes it look like a bad DVD.

Considering that KL released the sequals and not the original film, I'm assuming that someone else- most likely Criterion- has ITHOTN

What do we think are the Criterion chances of some of the recent Pride month additions to FilmStruck?

We know Hedwig is coming, and I’d also be down for Outrageous and Torch Song Trilogy!
