What are some silent films on Blu-ray? I own The Kid but want to watch more silent films.

If your looking at Criterion’s all Chaplin’s are worth owning especially Gold Rush which is an excellent release. Then you have the Harold Lloyd’s which are equally fun. I also like the Phantom Carriage.

I also purchased The Virgin Spring.

I'm gonna have to go back and get El Sur. I had it in my cart but took it out. Please don't judge me for being a cheap bastard.
I actually watched Beyond the Hills last night & loved it, it's very Bergman. Graduation is great also, that director , Cristian Mungiu is amazing. I love Virgin Spring, I was being cheap tho also cause I have the DVD and didn't feel like upgrading. I've never seen El Sur but, it looks kinda like a Tarkovsky film a little bit and I'm a huge Pedro Almodovar fan and he loves that film. That film uses one of Almodovar's main cinematographers, Jose Luis Alcaine.....he also shot Passion, the Depalma movie w Rachel McAdams.

From Criterion, the other Chaplin movies, Harold Lloyd's movies e.g. "Safety Last!", Hitchcock's "The Lodger", and "The Passion of Joan of Arc" come to mind.

I just got Moonrise Kingdom. It had a good rating in the iTunes Store so I got the Criterion Blu-ray. I also have The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Royal Tenenbaums and enjoyed both movies a lot. I think Wes Anderson is one of those where you either hate it or love it.

Hey all, I don’t post in this thread often so here goes...

I’m trying to build a film noir collection and I know the Criterion sale is ongoing now at Barnes and Noble, does anyone happen to know all of the film noir films that Criterion has released thus far? And a second question, which ones would be in a higher priority list to get? Thank you!

I don't think there's much safety in Amazon's pricing, which can sometimes play to your advantage. Still, if I see a price I like, I usually grab it fast because it can change quickly.

Removal of European Union Addresses from BN.com

Luckily, I can see that Amazon has (almost) price-matched their Criterion titles... at least for now.

Does anyone here know if it’s safe to expect Amazon’s prices to stay this low for the entire duration of the B&N sale or if I should get my order in quick?

I remember a year or two ago (or was it even longer?), Amazon had their own big summer(?) sale on Criterion releases. They haven’t made this a recurring thing that us Europeans should start holding out for, now that B&N has abandoned us...?
Blimey. I had no idea B&N had stopped shipping to EU countries. That's too bad. The notification in the link is undated, but I wonder if this is recent and related to the GDPR which went into effect on May 25? Basically, B&N deciding to opt out of compliance by simply ceasing to do business with EU citizens.

I don't buy Criterion from Amazon, but I do track prices in a Wish List. They can be all over the place, and very occasionally even sub-$20. I would think if you see a title around $22-23 it is a good price and worth picking up.

I don't know for certain that Criterion ship overseas, but they have the two 50% flash sales every year - which could work out well assuming you have the patience to wait.

I'm no Film Noir expert but if I had to pick one I'd go with The Killing.

Ordered 4 online:

Bull Durham (pre-order)
sex, lies and videotape (pre-order)
Le Samourai
The Age Of Innocence (was going to pick this one up in-store today, but apparently every store within a 25-mile radius of me is sold out of it).

Anyone have the Eclipse 46: Ingrid Bergman DVD set?

I do like Bergman, and not just her "Hollywood" films. But not sure about the early Swedish work.

Clearly, I'm looking for an excuse for another B&N shopping trip...

Technically not a silent film, but if you're into eerie things, you might try Vampyr. Much of it uses title cards for the dialogue. Defintely has a silent film aesthetic, and it's very very eerie.

I agree, I'd also say Asphalt Jungle & Kiss Me Deadly are essential too.

The Killers, Gilda, and Mildred Pierce are good ones too.

Night and the City is an amazing noir, although with the fantastic Richard Widmark Guardian interview, the (B-locked) BFI edition is much superior. There's also Rififi and Kiss Me Deadly. If you're okay with neo-noir, Revanche is an interesting entry.

After becoming a B&N member and saving 10% the cashier gave me a 20% of any one item coupon. After that I used three AMEX gift cards I’d been holding onto to make my final out of pocket cost $23.81.

No. It refers to a pink horse on a carousel.

Excellent film noir, set in New Mexico (which is almost treated like it's abroad).
