The Tree of Life is $22.89 for pre-order on Amazon, so I pulled the trigger.

When the "Hitchcock 9" were restored, the rights got split between Criterion and somebody else, which is one of the big reasons that there's not box set, and also why Criterion can't stream half of them (or release them on disc).

See, I don't see how that's possible. I understand that grain is a thing that comes natural with film, there's not a way to entirely remove it without extensive work, assuming you want the final product to look any good. Some scenes in Scanners, for example, that had a black background were so grainy that it looks like there's something flying around behind them. It is so glaringly obvious that it's hard to get past, hindering the quality of the image. It just doesn't look very good. This isn't to say that 100% of all films that show grain are low quality, just where it's so visible that it takes away from the experience.

Studiocanal has the others I believe at least Blackmail(from a recent viewing of it on TCM). Though Young And Innocent are with ITV according to the picture of the packaging from this very website which would make you think it should've seen a Region A release.

Can I ask what the sharpness setting is on your tv? Usually when people post these types of comments, their sharpness setting is too high. Artificial sharpening via the tv makes grain look awful.

FUNNY GAMES on TCM in 10 minutes. Wondering if it’ll have a Janus logo.

EDIT: It did

Wow watched another mind-blowing film tonight. I really hit the jackpot with my last B&N sale order lol

What a visual treat An Actor’s Revenge is. One of the coolest movies I have ever seen. I was a little bit worried because I’m not a fan of kabuki but this really didn’t have any of the traditional stylings of kabuki except for a few minutes at the beginning and the end.

Next time I’m going to watch it with no subtitles and on mute just enjoying all of the visuals. The shadows, the fog and the vivid colors.

Last night I saw Columbus, the debut film by frequent Criterion extras contributor Kogonada. I hope Criterion releases this film (there has been no other DVD or blu ray release of this film worldwide), here are my thoughts (taken from another thread):

Columbus - 8/10

The debut film from DVD/blu ray extra video essayist Kogonada is very similar in mood/tone/vibe to Jim Jarmusch’s recent Paterson. Introspective and reflective with a lot of silence and long takes, it nevertheless has very compelling characterisation that is brought to life through some excellent performances from John Cho and, especially, Haley Lu Richardson. There is no traditional character arc, at least not in the usual sense, and there are no great dramatics, but it builds to its conclusion in a layered precise manner, and the sum is definitely greater than the equal of its parts.

It also look stunning, with a great use of the modern architecture landmarks from the city of Columbus.

Which of the films you bought have you watched before? Of those, I've seen On The Waterfront, Rififi, Tokyo Story, Rashomon, and Thief. All are outstanding.

Really nice haul, overall, and quite the eclectic bunch, too.
Thanks! I should be receiving all 14 within the next 3 days and I've just started two weeks staycation so I'm stoked!

I've seen Rashomon, On the Waterfront, The Killers, Ugetsu, House and Thief. Loved all five of them. The rest I've heard amazing things about so I was willing to risk blind buying them. I'm already thinking about getting some more before the month is over!

Can someone help me out here? I saw the virgin spring bc I’m a big fan of last house on the left and immediately fell in love with it.

I decided to pick up more from the director Ingmar Bergman so I picked up Persona, The Seveth Seal, Wild Strawberries, and cries and whispers. Are there any other I need to get ?

Sawdust & Tinsel and The film trilogy are great too but, they're only on DVD in the collection so far. Really anything by Bergman is worth checking out. Face to Face is one to look out for, that & Virgin Spring and 2 of his best imo. You're off to a great start though!

The Film Trilogy is a masterpiece. If one doesn't want to purchase dvd' s they should buy this anyway, especially if they're into Bergman.

This x100. These were the films that really hooked me on Criterion in general and Bergman specifically. Simply magnificent!

To add to this category: I'd say Elio Petri's Investigation Of A Citizen Above Suspicion is well worth seeking out.

I can't recommend that film more. Great score by Morricone btw. All the films I've seen by Petri I absolutely love. Missing & Z are two more I recommend by Costa-Gavras.

I caught 12 Angry Men on TCM a couple days ago and loved it. Adding it to my list for the sale.
