The Virgin Spring
The Virgin Suicides
The Age of Innocence
Black Narcissus, a movie about a bunch of nuns.

I just had a Catholic high school flashback.

Very nice haul, Gambit.

Someone mentioned horror films in the Criterion Collection earlier. Black Narcissus is a good candidate.

Catholic high school was a horror film! The only think that made it bearable the girls in those school girl outfits with the short pleated skirts.

Films using religion as a means of psychological terror fascinate me, and Black Narcissus, like Bergman, is grade a material.

On that note, I still need to check out Beyond the Hills which I just recently picked up.

I did buy Virgin Suicide and Virgin Spring the same day, lol.

And definitely, Black Narcissus is for sure a horror movie. Kathleen Byron is truly terrifying, especially her reveal in the last scene.

I placed what should be the first of two orders with Barnes & Noble. I'm not going too crazy this time around because I'm eyeing the next Flash sale. I'm almost to my next $50 cert, and I'd like to put that towards either the Dietrich & von Sternberg in Hollywood set, or The Before Trilogy. If the sale happens after the Bergman set hits the street, God help me. I might sell a lung, or something.

Anyhow, I put together a nice, diverse group of five. I'll pick up a few more before the sale ends. For now:

Every Man for Himself
The Piano Teacher
Kagemusha
Westfront 1918
Graduation

I want to get more into Godard's work, and Every Man allows me the opportunity to do that, while also starting to explore Isabelle Huppert's career. That and The Piano Teacher will be a good jumping in point. I've been dying to get Kagemusha for some time, but it seems that I always ended up making other choices. After seeing Kurosawa's large scale color battles in Ran, I can't wait to see Kagemusha for the first time. Westfront 1918 is another I've wanted badly since it was announced. I've been watching WW II-based films as long as I can remember, but I know comparatively little about its predecessor. That and All Quiet on the Western Front will make for a fantastic double feature.

The one I'm most looking forward to getting, though, is Graduation. The woman I love is Romanian, and this will give me more of a look into her world beyond the documentaries I've watched, what I've read, and what she's told me/shown me. The Romanian title is Bacalaureat; she told me this refers to the actual final test taken in high school before being accepted into university. The Romanian lifestyle is about as different as it could possibly be from the American. As I alluded to, I'm Roman Catholic. She's Eastern Orthodox. The two religions were actually one before the Great Schism of 1054. Even though she's not overtly religious (her family is), she's very spiritual, and observes all the customs (Mărțișor, name days, etc). Family is incredibly important, much more so than in the States. Seeing the family dynamic will give me insights. Plus, it's obviously going to be a wonderful film. It won the Palme d'Or in the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

I don't think any of these five will be going on to the ever-growing "to watch Criterion stack".

Forgive me for being a little behind, but I just learned that The Confession is OOP. But what about Z? It looks like that may also be OOP but the Criterion site says that it's backordered.

I'll add Beyond the Hills during the Flash sale if I don't just grab it before the August 6th sale cutoff at B&N. Not surprisingly based on the subject matter (crises of faith, behavior that goes against Orthodox doctrine), it's a much darker film than Graduation. I figured wading into Cristian Mungiu's work slowly was best. It's always an adventure to discover art from a new country, and Romania has a beautiful culture.

I'll own both, soon. The more time I can spend listening to Romanian spoken by natives, the better.

Graduation is brilliant but Beyond the Hills is amazing (but yes also more emotionally devastating).

Oh, just...

Paths of Glory
The Killing
The Phantom Carriage
The Uninvited
Stagecoach
The Red Shoes
The Gold Rush
High and Low
Only Angels Have Wings
In Cold Blood
Bicycle Thieves
Eraserhead
Sweet Smell of Success
Gimme Shelter
My Life as a Dog
Three Colors Trilogy
Being John Malkovich
Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman
The Apu Trilogy
The 39 Steps
The Last Temptation of Christ
Crumb
Odd Man Out
Ikiru
Letter Never Sent
Kuroneko

There's surely others that I've been wanting for awhile but they're lower priority.

Yes! I tell myself after every sale that next time I'm going to force myself to get it and I'll just have a tough job of narrowing down maybe a couple more titles to grab alongside it. But I always end up seeing it as one title taking up a big chunk of my budget, even though there are multiple films inside, or multiple of the same kind of film, so I end up grabbing strictly individual titles and feel like I'm getting more, or at least more variety. Realistically, box sets have no chance with me. One of these sales, I'll need to force myself to grab a box set and sacrifice some singles.

El Norte
Z
Ikiru
The Apu Trilogy

and I'm pretty sure there was a rumor about one more

I finally got Kagemusha during the last Criterion sale and it was a masterpiece. All I'll say about it the events that lead up to the epic finish are superb. IDK if you own Grand Illusion by Jean Renoir either but that's a WW1 film I would get if you don't have. Grand Illusion, IMO is one of the best films ever. Also, this reminds me that I need to get Ran as one of the few Kurosawa films I've yet to see.

There was a recent post here or in the current B&N sale thread to the effect that Criterion confirmed in response to an email that it had only lost the rights to The Confession.

If Criterion still has the rights to Z (which seems certain), it's a bit of a mystery why no upgrade yet. Back in 2015, a 2k restoration was shown in Cannes. And a BD of Z appeared in a French Costa-Gavras box set released in 2016.

I finally watched it via my DVR in the past few weeks, and it was excellent. I didn't outright love it, but it's obviously superbly crafted. It's just a subtle film that you really need to pay attention to. I read through the synopsis and an article on it afterward and I appreciated it more. It's one I can see improving with more viewings. I'd rather own a Criterion edition but I'll make do and buy the Lionsgate BD sometime.

I just ordered The Confession for BN in-store pickup.

This store is a bit of a drive, but it's a fairly easy drive - just long-ish.

Hope I don't regret it.

Good luck, although I suspect M was referring to the ordinary English subtitles that English language films in their catalog usually have, not full SDH subs which detail music and sound cues in parentheses.

I don't bother ordering from b&n any more, but in the past they have taken back opened items, if my memory serves. Usually though I was returning a good number of them with my own dime, most of them probably still sealed, so ymmv. Yes, store-bought only for me now. (Oh and that includes no ordering into the stores either, waste of time when I tried.)

I'm the opposite - to me, the Criterion sales are an event, and getting a box set of some sort seems like the icing on the cake. So I have lots of Criterion box sets...

* And a busted budget
