thanks for the info. i'll check with the local B&N tomorrow to see about replacing my copy of Che.

Andrei Rublev seems to be coming to the UK in October, and based off the Amazon UK link it's going to be a digi-pack.

There's a difference between Out-of-Print and selling out of the first pressing.

I remember way back when there were persistent rumours about the DVD of Rushmore going OOP, for the same reason that almost no seller had stock for months. Of course it didn't and is still in print nearly twenty years later

More importantly, a restoration of Ermanno Olmi's Il Posto is screening at Venice.

Hopefully an upgrade from Criterion is on the horizon...

Ray Jackson is back!

I hate to break it to you though that the title of the film Naked is not what you think it is. It's about the nudity of human emotion. It's about the nakedness of ego and personality and attitude, baring one's soul and spirit. Sure, there is some physical female nudity accompanied by a horrible (rape) scene portrayed by Katrin Cartlidge (RIP), but that's about it. There's nothing erotic about Naked whatsoever. It's brutal and in your face in such a way that inspired me to re-enact a scene from David Thewlis for an acting class I took a few years ago. I memorized 2 minutes of dialogue from one of the scenes he was in (involving doomsday, Nostradamus, and astrology). You can watch me act out this scene outside here if you want:

Naked is one of my favorite films of all time in terms of sheer raw acting. It's bleak as hell and incredibly dark from a humanistic standpoint. However, its fantastic Schadenfreude if you're into that. Basically, Johnny's character is one that most of us would appreciate we're not him.

With few exceptions, I pretty much always wait for the B&N sales and go in-store to buy Criterions. Sometimes, if it's a new release at a good price (Night of the Living Dead, The Passion of Joan of Arc), I'll pre-order through Amazon. I also participated in the Criterion flash sale earlier this year, but only bought new titles (The Breakfast Club, The Silence of the Lambs, Elevator to the Gallows). If it's an older title, especially a digipack, I make sure to grab it at B&N in-store so I can be picky about condition.

Oh yeah, for sure the Criterion sales are an event for me, as you can see in my above response. That's where I buy most of mine.

It is exciting to get box sets, that's for sure. It's been a long time since I got one in-store. December 2013 I got the Qatsi Trilogy. Since then I've bought Lone Wolf and Cub and The Before Trilogy, but through Amazon at their incorrect lower prices ($40 each). I don't know if Shoah counts, since it's one (long) film, or Fanny and Alexander, but those are more recent (July 2016 and Nov 2015). There's also Yojimbo/Sanjuro, but that's a combination of two singles. I have more than I realized. Just feels like I haven't been getting any in recent sales. There's definitely a few that I want still, as my list that you quoted shows, and more than that even (War Trilogy, Demy, BBS, Tati, Cassavetes).

Has there been any more information on a Chungking re-release since the Janus listing? As far as I can tell they have the rights back but I haven't been in the loop lately, and have an offer for my copy that is very hard to refuse.

I've managed to give the sale a miss, but I've spent more on other films than I would've on Criterions anyway. I'm bad at this.

WKW was in the states a few months ago to receive an honorary degree from Harvard. He visited Criterion as well (Contributing to possible supplements?). That's the latest.

Criterion needs to get cracking on a domestic 2046 disc, if no one else is going to.

Criterion has had a trend of not subtitling the English-language parts of these films in similar releases–anywhere from Ron Perlman's dialogue in Cronos, Scorsese's scene in Dreams, and up to 1/4 of the running time of Carlos. In this case, M's response is that the foreign-language films in the box will be subtitled normally, but the mixed-language films (The Touch and The Serpent's Egg) will have SDH subtitles that caption the entirety of the film's dialogue.

Anyone have any information on whether Criterion plans to rerelease the World Cinema Project sets on BD ONLY like they did with Zatoichi? Thanks!

Also any opinions on 2 or 3 titles to choose from these below. Trying to narrow down a final haul outside of the pair of Eclipse sets I plan to buy.

El Sur
Beyond the Hills
Kameradschaft
Canoa: A Shameful Memory

Also looking for feedback on El Sur.

Spirit of the Beehive has been on my radar for a while, curious if this will hold me over.

A few friends have recommended this one to me. Letterboxd also has a really good set of reviews in the 4/5 range as well. (El Sur that is)

I love Spirit of the Beehive and El Sur is very close behind. El Sur is a very good film. The extras are great too and especially illuminating when it comes to the film's production issues. Plus it has the novella the film is based on. Great release as a whole that I definitely recommend.
