For those in the know, any rumors of David Lynch films currently not on blu being prepped by Criterion? Elephant Man, Lost Highway, Straight Story and Inland Empire all do not have region 1 blu ray releases...so one can hope!

The B&N I go to was stocked incredibly well this sale for whatever reason, with some of their lower profile titles (i.e "White Material", "The Forgiveness of Blood", "The Tin Drum", etc.) being available for the first time in store that I've seen in newly-wrapped copies. The woman behind the counter, who I've talked to a few times and is such a kind, awesome lady, told me that Criterions have been flying off the shelves. The guy up in the media section told me that a ton teenagers have been going into the media section during the weekends and asking about films, mostly the Wes Anderson films and the more high-profile stuff, but I loved hearing it.

Recent B&N haul...

I'm curious why Spartacus/Lolita even The Shining haven't gotten the Criterion treatment?!

You just did yourself an excellent service by purchasing those two films, sir.

Spartacus on Criterion? Who needs it. Lolita would be welcome. The Shining with both cuts in a new restoration would be MOST welcome.

Thank you!

I've never see The Killing, looking forward to that.

Oh definitely agree with you on The Shining, new restoration with both cuts I'd be in heaven!

If one hasn't had Spartacus on Criterion before, it would be worth it just for the extras with Peter Ustinov.

Seeing as Spartacus had a good, remastered version put out in 2015, I wouldn't even know what Criterion could do to improve on it, other than tacking on more extras. Still got the CC DVD myself.

Lolita, only a matter of time I'm sure. Most of the other titles seem to be the big flagship titles I doubt studios would license out any time soon.

Having recently seen Ready Player One, I got a feeling now that there will be renewed interest in The Shining (just in time for the upcoming Dr. Sleep movie, how about that?). All the more reason for studios (WB I assume?) to cling to it. But it has me hopeful that a UHD will be around the corner.

The existing Universal release of Spartacus is superb and there's no reason for Criterion to release a version.

I agree and had the same thought after seeing RP1 & with Dr. Sleep film happening only a matter of time it seems.

I’ve seen people that request “Taxi Driver” for a Criterion. The 2016 Sony release is the definitive version for me until a 4K comes around.

Taxi Driver can’t be improved short of 4K UHD. The 2016 Sony release has an excellent transfer and is absolutely loaded with bonus features, including three commentaries. It even has Scorcese’s commentary from the 80s done for the Criterion laserdisc. There’s also plenty of featurettes, a documentary, a 40-minute Q&A panel, a location re-visit, and a storyboard comparison. There is literally nothing Criterion can do to improve it. I even got it for $7 at Target with slip. Excellent release. Excellent.

Lolita could use a new release. Warner’s release has a decent transfer, but is barebones. The 1997 adaptation could use a US Blu-ray too.

That's because there are people who fetishize the label over the film or quality of the product, etc. You could literally have the most definitive edition of a film possible, let's say "The Swimmer" from Grindhouse", and these folks would be calling for a Criterion edition.

Last weekend, I shook the dust off of my Sony Blu-ray of Stand By Me, and watched it for the first time since I bought it six years ago.

Stand By Me is not my absolute favorite movie, but, as I wrote in my review, I've easily...easily...watched it more times than I've watched any other movie. A friend and I saw it on the theater on opening weekend in 1986, and, for years after that, I would revisit it on a near-weekly basis courtesy of a VHS recording that the same friend had taken from an HBO showing. You could lock me up in a dark room, and I could replay the entire movie by memory, scene-by-scene and quote-for-quote.

This movie is begging for a Criterion release.

The extras and presentation on the existing disc are excellent, but that's never stopped Criterion before, and I can see them taking it a few steps farther.

I'm not sure what the rights situation is with the labels, and I'm not going to delve into that, but the idea of Criterion releasing this as another Rob Reiner title is exciting, even if that idea just stays in my own head indefinitely.

A few years ago, this would have seemed far-fetched for Criterion, but not so much now, in light of The Princess Bride, The Breakfast Club, and such.

Lolita, as mentioned, is one Kubrick film that really needs to be released by Criterion.

Films like Spartacus and Taxi Driver which already have superb editions released are a waste of time when films like Arsenic and Old Lace, A Face in the Crowd, The Lady Eve, and Roman Holiday could use the Criterion treatment.

These are my biggest Criterion wishes, along with Primer.

'Course, if we're talking modern/populist a la Breakfast Club and Tootsie, I have a dozen suggestions!
