I want to buy Il Sorpasso and I'd rather have a standard case because the dual format digipacks of this title have not held up so well on the shelves.
They issue the separate DVD and Blu-ray editions when they sell out of the dual-format release.

Well... I made another stop after telling myself I wouldn't. All Blind Buys: Barry Lyndon, Breaking The Waves, Carlos and The Killing.

I'll let you know how terrifying it is once I watch it... I've seen Antichrist, Nymphomaniac and Melancholia by him before... I imagine this will likely damage my psyche as much as those did.

Is there any chance the Vampyr release will stop coming with the fat book I see in its package soon? I didn't even realize it had such a thing until yesterday. Would love to get it, but I'd like to wait until November. If it has a chance of vanishing I might have to grab it today...

Also, how good is the book?

I cannot speak for the longevity of the book package or the quality of the book itself... But I will say Vampyr was fantastic blind buy and I can't imagine you'd be disappointed with the purchase. 20 dollars can often mean a struggle in weeks to come or not... But I loved the film and I'd recommend getting it regardless, whenever you can.

P.S. Ya'll won't be waiting long. I am currently watching Breaking The Waves, so you'll have an update in a few hours.

Well, I have the Criterion dvd, so that's only reason I haven't bought the blu already. Amazing film I no doubt want to upgrade.

Breaking the Waves is much more hopeful than any of those. Not exactly uplifting, but it doesn’t leave you in anguish. It’s an amazing piece of film.

You'll like that one. My feeling is you probably won't like Life is Sweet as much.

Well I will say that while not necessarily as explicit as the other films I've seen. This one left me with an even larger case of 'downer'. Wonderful film, however it's a real gut puncher.

The book contains Dreyer's original screenplay for Vampyr and a reprint of Sheridan Le Fanu's vampire novella Carmilla. You can find these things on the net (legally for free) even if you don't get the book edition.

The three films you name dropped as why you don't want Breaking the Waves is the Depression Trilogy.

Now that I'm back from my "vacation" I can post my B&N haul:

Graduation
Beyond the Hills
Dietrich & von Sternberg in Hollywood
sex, lies, and videotape

So, not a massive haul, but one I'm happy with.

I recently got His Girl Friday on BD (blind-buy) but do you think I should watch The Front Page before or after Friday?

My entire haul for this sale on two separate trips:

Arguably my biggest haul ever. I'm so tempted for a third stop, but I should save my money for some pre-orders for this month.

Eh, I didn't think much of The Front Page. I think it's better to see His Girl Friday first, which is the bigger must-see, then see the other one as a bonus.

Same vein as the 1920s Wizard of Oz, the earlier versions of the Maltese Falcon, the silent version of Ben Hur--got all of those as bonuses to their respective main feature, but they're all just that, bonuses. Wouldn't recommend watching any of them in release order, might as well start with the most popular, then keep going if you like them that well.

I couldn't agree more with every single one these points.

Watched Night and the City this afternoon. Such a phenomenal film. Love the sense of dread throughout the whole film. Saw it once before about 20 years ago and didn’t remember much about it, so this was like watching it for the first time. Going to watch the British version whenever I get the time. Excited to compare and see which version is better. We also need more Gene Tierney on Blu-ray. What a stunner.

I remember when the Five Easy Pieces standalone release came around, it was pointed out that it featured one of the documentaries that was originally paired with Head. People speculated at the time if the rights to that film were about to expire.
