I'm proud to say that I didn't buy any. With that said I did subscribe to their online streaming service, FilmStruck. It's a great way to check out Criterion releases I've never seen before. Most Criterion titles, even the ones I like, are not something I want to own. So watching them on FilmStruck is a great way to try before you buy.

Fox owns I Heart Huckabees, and considering that their relationship with Criterion is pretty good, there’s a chance it could be released in the future. |

We have enough political and social postings/arguments all over the news, social media and elsewhere...the nonsense stays off this forum and out of this thread.
If you don’t like a particular reviewer’s take or style then skip over those reviews. |

If the Criterion Collection thread is limited to discussion of DVDs and Blu-Rays then you're right. But I thought this was a thread about more than that. Criterion has their own "channel" now, with most of their esteemed collection available for streaming. I personally think this is on topic. But, if I'm wrong, please let me know.

I did consider buying something during this last B&N sale. But there was really nothing I wanted. I'm through with blind buys. I'll either borrow the movie from the library, which has an excellent collection, or I'll watch it on FilmStruck. If it's something I want to rewatch and add to my personal library, I'll add it to my list and buy it the next time there is a 50% off sale. |

Just to help me understand where the mod teams lines are, how would it be appropriate to discuss political films here? Espically considering the (valid) notion that all films have a political viewpoint.

People have political viewpoints, and sometimes their films do. But not all. It's valid to think so, but not necessarily the truth.

This sophism - "every film is political" - is often repeated (by people who want to force others to talk about something they don't want to), but almost never elaborated upon. As long as a film is about something, anyone can attribute a political meaning to it, which doesn't mean the filmmakers intended the movie to have a political agenda.

why would the filmmaker's intentions have anything to do with whether or not a movie is x-thing or not? tl;dr not every film is intentionally politcal/topical, and whether or not it is, is usually a decision like anything else concerning why a movie is anything. |

How people interpret themes of films (or anything for that matter) is a crucial part of critique and therefore informs the medium itself. Wanting to police that thread of interpretation is robbing ourselves of something really important and critical.
I understand this makes people uncomfortable, but I think that’s part of the point. |

It seems to me that you don't care about what someone (a filmmaker through a movie, for example) is trying to convey; instead, you'd just like to put your own stamp on it, all other factors be damned. If one doesn't take the artist's intention into account, anyone can appropriate the work of art, ascribe it whatever political meaning they see fit, whether it fits or not, and even weaponize it, which is unfair at best and dangerous at worst. A film is not made in an intellectual vacuum - it is carefully planned and designed, which means intention is integral to the equation. But to assert that said intention is always political is a baseless generalization. |
