Blu-ray Samurai

That's all I'd need to know to spend my money. It's not a question of "will I buy everything Akira Kurosawa has ever done", it's more a matter of, "in what order will I buy what I don't yet have?"
So far, I have: Rashomon Ikiru Seven Samurai Throne of Blood Yojimbo Sanjuro Kagemusha Ran (the StudioCanal 4k import) There are few certainties in life: death, taxes, and the Milwaukee Brewers choking down the stretch. Add to that an unwavering confidence that any film Kurosawa shot in his lifetime is going to be masterfully executed. The man could do no wrong in my eyes, and if a film doesn't absolutely knock me over the first time, it's not his fault-I just wasn't paying close enough attention. |

The master Criterion is playing on FilmStruck is adequate, but given the film was shot on 70MM, it can look way better. So I'm waiting eagerly to hear about a proper restoration first, and Criterion releasing the current transfer would some serious bullshitting on their part since the telecine is at least more than a decade old.

Unless I missed it, DVDBeaver only did caps of the TV version, and none for the theatrical version. The TV version is 5 hours long, so I don't think anyone should be expecting very high bitrate stuff there. I do have to imagine the theatrical looking much better in this regard.

Naruse will finally be getting some love on Blu-ray by way of Carlotta Films in France. They have a box set upcoming for five films of his.
Includes: Sound of the Mountain (1954) Flowing (1956) When A Woman Ascends the Stairs (1960) Yearning (1964) Two in the Shadow (1968) Hopefully Criterion follows suit and starts putting out some of his films too. |

![]() There's another film that had a recent restoration and no BD release. Really want this on BD. Wasn't it shot on 70mm? |

An update on FilmStruck:
I recently became a FilmStruck Member and I was originally delighted to have such easy access to so many Criterion releases, as well as other classic films. Unfortunately, it's not a perfect service. For one, the PQ appears to be lacking with many of the films. Admittedly, some of these have not been released on Blu-Ray, so what I am seeing may be as good as it gets. But it appears that the PQ is lacking, even when compared to other streaming services, such as Netflix or Amazon Prime. The service also has a number of technical glitches. They are hard to describe, but essentially something happens where the services stops and logs me out. When I return I can sometimes start watching where I left off. Sometimes I can't. Last night, I was Watching Godzilla vs Mothra. I had never seen it before and I figured I'd give it a go. What a terrible film. Just terrible. But, as usual, I sat through the whole thing just hoping it would get better. It didn't. With less than 2 minutes until the end the system crashed again - it had already crashed two times prior to that. When I logged back in I had to start the movie all over and fast forward to where I left off. I almost said, "screw it." But being the purist I am, who keeps a diary of every movie he watches, I needed to finish it. Then some errors came up saying that the film was not available in my area. So I had to start again and the glitch resolved itself, allowing me to watch the last two minutes of this dreadful film. Anyway, I have mixed feelings on FilmStruck. I like the access to so many Criterion and classic movies, but the interface is terrible and doesn't work well. I'm not sure how long I'm going to remain a subscriber. |

http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a...=89195&i=9&l=0 CLEARLY the old DVD isn't teal at all. It skews slightly magenta, as many DVDs did, but otherwise matches what was shown in theaters. Not sure why you are posting blatant misinformation when there's proof right in front of you. |
