This platitude is repeated often but doesn't stand up to much scrutiny. It's interesting how often this sentiment is expressed with any supporting arguments.

The legal court and court of public opinion are two entirely different things. Imposing this burden of proof on public opinion is silly.

Is this a solid blind-buy?
I think so. Criterion did a very good job with the PQ and extras. I enjoyed the movie a lot. It's critical of the revolution which I guess was allowed up until the early 70s. I always thought all dissent was strictly forbidden.

For others like me who don't do Amazon, B&N has this for $35 online. They also have a $5 off online coupon on the website for orders that are $30 or more. I did in-store pick-up and grabbed the sole copy they had for $30, only $5 more than it'd be during the 50% off sale in Nov. The packaging is just like The New World, so nice, it's gonna look beautiful on the shelf right next to it! Can't wait to check out the extended cut of this masterpiece!!!

Interesting. Thanks. I'll definitely pick it up.

I didn't mention it in my original post, but Carol Reed's Our Man in Havana is one of my favourite films - which conversely had to portray the Batista regime in a poor light as a condition of filming (just months after the revolution).

Received Tree of Life from amazon today (ordered when it was $22). I checked my order history and this is the only the 3rd criterion I have ever ordered from amazon. The other 2 were Anatomy of murder & Carlos which I bought back in 2012.

Received my Tree of Life today. I popped it in for a quick look and inevitably I found myself entranced and would up watching a lot more than I expected. Had to cut myself off after an hour or so, lest my evening of productive chores and video gaming be swallowed up by this mesmerizing thing of beauty. I'll definitely dedicate time this weekend to watch--really watch, absorb, process, analyze--the film.

It's been a long time coming, so this film deserves some attention and love, and not just a passing glance.

The 15th is on Saturday so I would guess Monday the 17th will be the announcement date.

As for predictions, December is usually slower and will probably especially be so this year. I'll guess:

24 Frames
My Brilliant Career
Tunes of Glory (upgrade)
Z (upgrade)

Two nice Janus titles they can use the restorations for to do upgrades, a recent release they have the rights for so little work to do there, and then a film they hinted at months ago in a newsletter clue.

I would guess most of the big hinted at titles, namely Notorious and In the Heat of the Night would be more likely to be held onto for January/February in anticipation of the February flash sale (like they did with Breakfast Club in Jan. and Silence of the Lambs/Night of the Living Dead in Feb.). Though, they did release Election last December so who knows. It definitely won't be a sexy month, but it'll hopefully be good all the same.

December editions, hard to predict what! I would have to guess that 2 of the 5 titles announced will be upgrades. Other than that i got nothin, but all will be good!

Do Criterion still have a licensing arrangement with Paramount? I'm wondering because it seems ages since they released a Paramount back-catalog title, and there are so many classic titles that you'd think they would be interested in - e.g. 'The Parallax View' (Pakula), 'Ragtime' (Forman), 'Catch-22' and 'Heartburn' (both Nichols), 'Hud' (Ritt) and so on.

Unless Criterion release some of these, there seems very little prospect of them ever appearing on Blu-ray.

Surely the 17th. I hope Chungking Express is one of them since it would be a great Christmas present for myself.

For those who don't follow the Kino thread, the rep over there seems quite convinced that Destry Rides Again and Winchester '73 will be coming from Criterion at some point:

Makes me wonder if Universal will give Criterion preference over the films restored as part of this initiative. Obviously we've seen Criterion put out some of Universal's restorations, though some Universal have elected to release themselves. And whether Criterion would upgrade the two Killers films in the near future remains to be seen, it's only been 3 years since the existing release.

Like every year, December is a light month so I'm not expecting any huge surprises. I am, however, hoping that Wanda will be announced.

I will 100% guarantee it won't come this month. December is usually slow and then add in the Bergman box coming a month prior and there is just no time whatsoever for the Criterion team to dedicate the time/effort to Godzilla.

Is something up with 3:10 to Yuma? It's gone out of stock at WOW, Deep Discount, ImportCDs and DVD Planet, all within the space of about an hour.
