When I hear "giants of cinema," I'm thinking "all-time greats." I think these are directors who made films that are considered among the greatest in cinema history, people who were game-changers, are taught and studied in film school, etc. These would be first-ballot Hall of Famers. Stanley Kubrick certainly qualifies, as would filmmakers like Welles, Hitchcock, Godard, Fellini, Bergman, Kurosawa, Eisenstein, etc.

As great as they are, I don't think Cronenberg, del Toro, and von Trier would be considered by most people in the film world to be "giants." Although they have made some terrific films, have their own unique and influential style, and certainly have their passionate fans.

Yeeees on Lady Eve! One can only hope, this is one of my most wanted bluray upgrades. Honestly it would be a day one purchase.

Why do you continue to predict Matewan every month when the rights are with Lionsgate? It hurts my soul.

Because I have such a shitty memory and keep forgetting. I’m gonna write it down, but I just want it so badly. Time to go after Lionsgate!

Some of you are really swinging for the fences this year. It's December.

Yep. December is always slow and will not be filled with big name titles.

Based on the Sawdust and Tinsel news, I'm going to revise my guess to:

My Brilliant Career
24 Frames
Z (upgrade)
Sawdust and Tinsel (upgrade)

Man, that DVD looks like shit too. It's such an amazing film. Lionsgate is the worst. Preserve one of the best films of the 80s. Is that too much to ask?

Haha. Tunes of Glory is definitely coming at some point. Its restoration just played at Venice via Janus, but (not to be a bummer) Heaven Can Wait did the same thing back in 2015 and its upgrade only came last month. So, between Z and Tunes of Glory, I would think Z will come sooner. Hopefully we don't have to wait three years for Tunes of Glory though.

Ooo, I didn't know about Venice, I knew it played at the TCM Fest in LA, a few weeks before I moved out here.

I agree that it's definitely coming -- before the next presidential election would be nice!

EDIT: I see that it's playing at the NYFF at the end of the month. Unfortunately, if it is still touring the festival circuit, December might be a bit soon for it.
