It's not an aspect ratio typically seen in modern movies unfortunately, much like Academy. I tend to prefer taller ARs over wider ones.

I never seen that aspect ratio before, I thought my TV settings were off. Weird.

It's a nice balance between standard 1.85 and 1.33/37

It looks like almost 16:9 but not quite...I don't get the thin vertical bars

Literally the first result of that search answers your question.

Which has also been discussed at length in the existing thread for this release, that you also didn't bother to search for.

It used to be one of the standard ARs for a while, but eventually got phased out and now only shows up once in a blue moon. If you've ever seen the first three James Bond movies (Dr. No, From Russia With Love, and Goldfinger), they all have this AR.

But I would think that A Criterion Collection edition would have changed that to something more flattering

Was it 1.66:1 or 1.75:1 that I was watching exactly? A little distracting for an otherwise gorgeous edition.

The Criterion is 1.67 and the old WB disc was 1.75. I don't see how it was "distracting" I guess you don't watch full frame films.

Full frame would be 16:9. This was not full frame but it had thin vertical bars.

If the flash sale is this week, I'll probably have to skip it or at least limit myself to one or two titles. With the Bergman set coming out next month, I don't plan on going crazy with the B&N sale either. (Can't really complain, with the member discount, the box set will be less than $150 for 30+ movies and a hardcover book).

Criterion goes for what the director prefers, if they said anything on the matter, or what is most theatrically accurate.

Kubrick said 1.66:1 is his preferred ratio, so that’s what Criterion went with. The 1.78:1 version isn’t bad, but it doesn’t look as natural as 1.66:1- which Kubrick also used for Paths of Glory and The Killing. Other movies from the same time also used it, like 12 Angry Men.

Top is Warner, bottom is Criterion:

The Warner One is slightly stretched horizontally. I prefer the 1.66:1 version, because it’s what the director intended, and most likely it was framed for that ratio during filming.

I can understand preferring the 1.78:1 version, it’s nice to fill the TV, but it’s not accurate to what Kubrick intended.

Only negative of this whole BD presentation indeed
