To each their own. If I gotta deal with black bars I'd much rather deal with the typical horizontal bars we see in modern movies...But that's me.
Other than that, this movie looked and felt way ahead of its times (1975?)

Your response implies that professor was agreeing with you. That’s not the case.

Some thin bars is your breaking point? Your probably shouldn’t watch films.

Does this nonsense really deserve its own thread?

This guy can ask all the boneheaded questions his little heart desires here.

That would imply Rocko would have to actually search.

Personally I thought it was super boring, and Criterion should have inserted CGI dragons.

They should’ve outsourced it to Studio Deen in Japan:

The OP doesn't seem to understand that this, and many, many other films, were not made with the idea of how they would look on HDTVs.

You would not have had black bars in the theater. There would have been an aperture plate and/or masking. You would have just seen the screened image, and would not have cared about the aspect ratio... ah, those were the days.

I find thin vertical bands more distracting then thin horizontal lines, that's all

You really should look into getting a projector and screen setup then.

I'm thinking of buying two classic comedies, which is something I never went for before: My Man Godfrey and The Awful Truth.

I can never understand this complaint. How can inanimate black bars be distracting? It's not like they're dancing the Macarena.

If you're watching in a completely dark room or with some bias lighting, the black bars shouldn't even be seen at all. Wouldn't matter if they're horizontal or vertical if they're essentially invisible.

His signature also mentions something about "grey black bars", so if that's what he's seeing, it sounds like his display/blacks are not calibrated.

It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. As the movie progressed it got more and more intense. Not being familiar with the story I had no idea what was going to happen next. Amazing movie!

On my 100" projector screen it is not an issue, but on my oled tv those bars are very noticeable. Just not used to thin vertical bars.

This RockyIII guy and Filmbuff keep asking questions in different threads and then disagree with the answers or keep asking progressively dumb questions until they can get people to agree with them. It's pretty sickening.

If you have an OLED, then surely Black levels shouldn’t be an issue?

(And the screen burn thing isn’t that big of an issue from what I can tell)
