I'm about 600 pages into 1Q84 and it's reading quicker, as you said. It's hard to say which is my favorite Murakami as everything I've read so far has been great. Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World is really terrific. |

I’m not a Malick super-fan, but I find his movies interesting. I see that you are also a fan of Blade Runner 2049, so our taste in movies probably aren’t that different. So, I doubt that I will end up thinking that Tree of Life is “meh” anyways.

Trying to use logic and commonsense on RockyIII is like fixing a doorknob with a hammer...it won't work.

Some Like it Hot is at $19.32 on Amazon, even after tax that is going to be the same price as the B&N sale. Couldn't pass grabbing it up at that price and two day shipping.
Also, looks like the flash sale should be next Tuesday. |

Just revisited Kuroneko for the first time in a while as part of my October viewing.
Am I the only person around who feels that it's a better and creepier film than Onibaba? The latter is okay as far as historical dramas go, but it just lacks the later film's "bite"...especially its final 20 minutes. |

Agreed. I thought that the story of Kuroneko was more compelling and its aesthetics, much more impressive. I watched it for the first time two months ago. It was the best first-time watch for me this year. |

[QUOTE=Rich Pure Doom;15617035]Count me is one who hated Kuroneko. Wouldn't recommend it at all. Onibaba also sucks. I'm ready for the hate coming my way.
I, for one, appreciate all honest opinions -- even if they're negative. Just because something's a Criterion movie doesn't mean we HAVE to like it. I thoroughly dislike Bresson movies. I'm also not a fan of the Powell & Pressburger ones....and I haven't quite decided, but I think Melville's maybe a bit overrated. Hate me too if you want! |

Kuroneko:
Kuroneko is one overrated piece of work. Aside from the fact that there is MAYBE 45 minutes of material here stretched out to 100, I don't think it would've been compelling even in a shortened version. Much like in Onibaba, Shindo thinks that shots of trees, weeds, and good lighting equal a compelling tale. All of the characters here are at best dull, and at worst irrelevant. The story seemingly shifts to adapt to whatever emotional manipulation Shindo is trying for at the time. All the sudden, to spend time with her husband, the wife can now only exist for seven days. All of these scenes play out with such overly dramatic acting that certainly didn't fit my non-reaction to everything that was happening. Many Japanese films of this era (and still today) feature an acting style that doesn't appeal to me. With the male characters, it's either yelling every line or having a constant dramatic and pained facial expression, and with the female characters it's yelling and crying or ZERO emotion and coldness. There is no subtlety to any of this. It is especially bad in period pieces of this nature. The only Shindo I can wholeheartedly recommend is The Naked Island. His "horror" stuff is garbage. |

Onibaba:
Onibaba is exploitation nonsense disguised as an art film. Sure, the mask imagery towards the end is incredibly striking and there are the occasional slow motion shots of weeds (CLEARLY AN ART FILM), but besides that, this is a miserable slog of a film that is depressing to endure. This must've been quite the experience in 1964 Japan simply for the amount of boobs you get to see. Seriously, boobs are all over the screen for seemingly no reason at all in most scenes. It just became silly at a certain point. This is coming from a guy who loves boobs. This would've worked twice as well in a format similar to Kwaidan, at half the length. Onibaba is the type of cinema that deems it artful to wallow in misery that I just can't stand. Last edited by Rich Pure Doom; 10-09-2018 at 11:54 PM. |

I'm not going to sift through your history to find examples, but let's just say I've seen numerous posts of yours where I'm either shaking my head, or facepalming (not unlike what I'm doing right now with your nigh ridiculous posts on the 2 films in question). So I've kind of gotten accustomed to just disregarding your opinion on film. I don't mean any personal offense though, we're all entitled to our opinions, and I don't expect all of us to agree on the same things. I'd say it's more the manner and degree to which you spew your opinions, moreso than the opinion itself that i don't care for. <3
