While I don't agree with RPD's "style" of commentary much of the time, I have to agree with him about the manner of Japanese acting in general. It really doesn't appeal to me, either. Of course and obviously, there are exceptions. And it's only a different approach. To take a different example from another culture, I'm sure there are lots of people who just can't stand Tarkovsky's films, finding them so slow and ponderous to be intolerable (personally, I love his work). Every style or approach is not going to appeal to everyone, of course. Heck, I remember a friend I had a few years ago who couldn't stand Bergman, feeling it was far too introspective. OTOH, he never called out Ingmar's work, just commented that it wasn't up his alley.
I will say that with as little Asian cinema as I've been exposed to and/or own, I've found that I prefer Chinese films. For example, I don't think I've ever seen a film by Wong Kar-Wai that I didn't very much appreciate. But yes, there certainly are better ways to criticize a film one didn't like at all than to say, "it sucks." I don't believe I've ever said that about even The Phantom Menace. I may have, but I hope not. I have, though, certainly said that it's the worst film I've ever seen in the theater. That one, I'll stand by. ![]() |

Sometimes a passionate negative opinion helps make a sale!
Thanks to RPD saying he hates Kuroneko (which I've never seen) and Onibaba sucks, that means I'll probably love Kuroneko, as I absolutely love Onibaba. I will now blind buy Kuroneko during the next flash sale. Thanks for the recommendation, RPD! ![]() |

Unfortunately I didn't see either the art or the horror. I experienced the boredom though. What's weird is how often I've read people commenting that The Naked Island is either slow or boring, but I found that pretty riveting.

I respectively disagree. Onibaba is a masterpiece in nuance and atmosphere. It's never gratuitous or explicit. You seem overly offended by some slight nudity and obviously turned it into your main focus while watching the film when that is not at all the intent of the film.
The Japanese have a much less conservative view of female topless nudity and in many societies its no different then male topless nudity. If this had been male characters your outrage would disappear. Regardless the womens breast were never the focus of the film. It's pretty obvious the films not an excuse to show nudity as neither of these women are filmed in a sexy way, but actually dirty and disheveled. Living in poverty in a hot, sticky and steamy swamp area filled with susuki grass and stealing what little they can find from dead samurai's to survive. You wouldn't be that concerned with your clothing being buttoned head to toe in these circumstances. Eitherway the film is about lust, sexual tension and greed and the two sexually unfulfilled, lonely women living in poverty and the man who comes between them. It is never done in a way to look overly sexy or exploitative. The film is lush with symbolism and painted with hauntingly & beautifully lensed landscapes and beautiful widescreen black and white all with a minimalist approach. If you can't see the beauty and expertise in this film and why it is held in such high regard it's hard to argue otherwise. Kaneto Shindō has a long list of critically amazing films and to my knowledge has never been accused of exploitation. Last edited by Banned User; 10-10-2018 at 05:16 PM. |
