Plus I've noticed they frequently screw up information, titles, and postings for film. Many foreign or older films will have a release year of 2017 or something like that, while a single film can appear in their listings three or four times with different pages (and no idea what the difference is between each) for it each time.

This. Unfortunately I'm unable to access it, but I've often thought it would be great to be able to sign up and binge on Criterion films so I know what to buy. If I could find out for free, though, I'd sample them ("free" because I'm assuming I get my money's worth from the subscription even without watching those films).

A few have popped up on Fox Classics here from time to time, in SD with the network logo over the top of it, but that still beats blind-buying. I haven't bought anything yet that I've watched on TV, but Philadelphia Story and Sweet Smell of Success moved way up my wishlist as a result. The Spy Who Came in From the Cold moved off my wishlist and saved me some money.

Unfortunately Sweet Smell of Success was sitting on my DVR unwatched when Deep Discount had their super-cheap Criterions so I avoided buying it at the time. On the other hand it does mean I own Rashomon, which I otherwise wouldn't have - and Rashomon was one I initially looked at and decided against wishlisting, only to love Seven Samurai after a blind-buy, immediately turn around and blind-buy Ran, love that too and drop Rashomon onto the list along with High and Low.

Why is this relevant to Filmstruck? AT&T acquired DirectTV and Time Warner (HBO, Warner and Turner) with the intent so they can offer a vertically-integrated stack of delivery platforms to serve their own content in a manner that does discriminate and charge differently by user, e.g., an AT&T customer will receive Game of Thrones in some combination of superior format/faster delivery, cheaper and/or free, earlier or with exclusive content, as opposed to a Verizon or Comcast customer.

The issue for Filmstruck, and by extension Criterion, is that it is a combo of not presently large enough/customers not valuable enough, with the result AT&T is of the opinion it will not scale up or align with AT&T's growth strategy, i.e., entice customers to choose AT&T over Verizon or Comcast.

My hope/feeling is AT&T will keep the TCM brand as a shingle similar to HBO, recognizing it may only be available to AT&T subscribers.

My fear is that AT&T will eliminate TCM and related Warner archive content all together, because the content is not as optimal when viewed on mobile, which is where AT&T sees the future of content consumption, i.e., the majority of viewers will watch content on a personal mobile device, and TVs go the way of the dinosaur.

Where Criterion as a streaming service fits in all of this is a bit of a mystery. One fit worth exploring is a partnership with Apple and their new TV service.

I think you need to look up what net neutrality means. It’s about treating all packets on the internet with equal priority. In other words, without net neutrality ISPs could prioritize one set of packets, say from Netflix (for a fee), over another set of packets (say little Bobby’s porn stream). It’s about where the packets are coming from (and going to) rather than what’s inside them. It really has little to do with content.

Allowing companies to become vertical monopolies is a different issue from net neutrality.

I'd argue that about 5% of people talking about net neutrality online actually know what it means.

Actually, it has a lot to do with content, at least as I define it, and your own statement alludes to this fact.

Game of Thrones and/or the AT&T service will undoubtably receive a fast lane on AT&T for AT&T customers, but unless AT&T pays for a fast lane on Comcast and Verizon, it will run more slowly, unless of course Comcast or Verizon fear losing customers by not giving precedence to the AT&T service.

Most likely Criterion, as an independent, will not be able to secure a fast lane for their content, so their service will run more slowly and be at a disadvantage.

Sure, companies didn't need to roll back net neutrality to bundle services and manipulate content, but what it does do is provide a powerful tool to promote their own content, e.g., Warner Media, and place competitive or independent content, e.g., Criterion, at a disadvantage.

Rolling back net neutrality is a big deal for the Criterion's of the world because lack of access to limited fast lanes devalues their content, unless of course, they sell their content to one of the big players who now own all the seats at the table.

So far I've watched 9 films in the Zatoichi set and have been blown away. All of them are great but the three so far that have stood out the most are:

I’ve too now seen a BN lose its media section. For now, there is a single rack of movies (with all Criterion’s shoved on it spine out) and single rack of vinyl which have been moved out into the book section of the store, but they have a very “temporary” look to them, the kind of thing that I doubt they are getting restocked. I’ve been lucky to have 6 BN’s within driving distance, but 3 now have no dedicated media areas, and a fourth has seen its media drastically reduced. 2 stores still look full, but I don’t have much hope for them now.

So sad to hear about FilmStruck. I don't have any streaming services, but that is the only one I would have considered getting since it actually seemed to have what I would consider interesting and quality content overall. If FilmStruck can't make it work, I am worried that the only streaming options that we will have going forward are the ones that cater to the lowest common denominator.

Finally watched the extended cut of Tree of Life. Such an overwhelming film. I personally feel the extended cut is too long, but there are also new scenes that I couldn’t imagine not being in the film. I think the perfect cut of that movie would be somewhere inbetween the extended and theatrical. An incredible piece of work though all around.

The cost is still the same as it was when it launched. There weren't any indications that they were in trouble financially. My guess is that the new people who took over probably didn't even know it existed until they decided to scrap it.

Yes, that was the most recent pricing. But it's closing. It's not taking on any new subscribers.
