He also turned down the lead in East of Eden. It would be fascinating to see Clift's take, but I just can't see anybody but James Dean as Cal Trask. The scene where Cal is offering the money he's made to his father to win his approval is one of the most powerful things I've ever seen, and it was largely improvised. I'm pumped that the Magnolia is showing East of Eden on November 20th. I'll be there with the world's biggest tub of popcorn.

Speaking of the imminent February announcement-first, I can't believe it's nearly the fifteenth already. Second, I'll let my DVR speak as to what I'm hoping for:

(yes, I'm a Barbara Stanwyck nut. )

I'm absolutely crying out for Libeled Lady and The Pianist to get blu-ray releases. Wuthering Heights, too. I can't do a thorough review of the year 1939 in film without it.

While we're on the subject, The Elephant Man, Paper Moon, A Place in the Sun, Ordinary People, Top Hat (hell, just give me a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers box set!), Arsenic and Old Lace, The Thin Man (the whole series, so, another box set), The Lost Weekend, Bringing Up Baby, Hell's Angels, The Spirit of St. Louis, and upgrades for Olivier's Hamlet, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and The Lady Eve.

I don't want too much, now do I?

I would also add a really fun movie I watched last night-Monkey Business. This overlooked Howard Hawks screwball comedy gem was high on my "to see" list, and I finally checked it off my list. Loved it! Cary Grant, Ginger Rogers, Charles Coburn, and Marilyn Monroe at 26 years old just starting to discover her comedic gifts. And excuse me for being a male, for a moment, but wow, she was drop dead gorgeous in this one!

Monkey Business. See Marilyn's gams. See Cary's glasses fog up!

Quite similar in tone to another Hawks' romp, Bringing Up Baby, Monkey Business is one of those films I want to own. It has high re-watch value for me. Rarely have I seen two leads have such fun in front of the camera. Ginger Rogers was a delight; she and Cary Grant were a joy to watch, and completely believable as a married couple.

Purchased “The Devils Backbone” from Barnes & Noble today! It’s a blind buy. But I’m not too nervous. I loved Pans Labyrinth and The Shape of Water!

After watching and reviewing Elevator to the Gallows just now, I'd be happier than a fat kid in a candy store if Criterion would announce Blu-ray upgrades of The Lovers and/or The Fire Within.

This has probably been asked many times over, but why isn't Criterion releasing true 4K releases for movies they have remastered in 4K?

UHD is still in infancy not to mention it’s much more expensive for pressing UHD discs, UHD master, etc. than it is for Blus or DVDs.

I'm fine with all of the big roles Clift turned down...East of Eden, On the Waterfront, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Rio Bravo...all of those resulted in special roles for their respective stars and I don't think Clift, as great as he was, would have improved on them any.

But Sunset Blvd. is the one classic I wish he hadn't. Wilder knew what he was doing when he wrote that part for Clift, and Clift knew how special a role it was. Supposedly he'd spend hours excitedly discussing the possibilities of it with Wilder and friends. For as solid as he was, there are just too many layers to that part that Holden wasn't able to exhume. Clift's sensitivity as a performer, complicated sexuality and real-life relationship with Libby Holman (allegedly the reason he ultimately turned it down) would have made it a much more complex characterization that would have added even more dimensions to the film.

Happy viewing on the rest of his work, and please let me/us know what you think. Clift losing Best Actor to Holden for Stalag 17 is one of cinema's cruelest ironies.

Okay. So, I just finished watching Mulholland Drive for the first time. I’ve never been so confused and drawn to a film. Honestly? I couldn’t even tell you what the plot is. It messed with my head that much! Just when I thought I understood it, the rug was pulled from under me!

B&N lists many foreign titles under their original language, making them hard to find
Thank You!! How did that never enter my mind to look it up under its French title.

The Morocco BD in the Dietrich/Von Sternberg box is quite a revelation compared to the DVD. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a demo BD transfer or anything, as the source material is far too limited for that, but the BD restoration finally lets you really appreciate the high level artistry that went into the look and atmosphere (especially the lighting). And it really changed my perception of the film too, really liked it this time around as compared to the previous watch on DVD.

If the 15th is a weekend or a holiday, the announcements are on the 16th or 17th. Otherwise they're on the 15th. It's not complicated.

I'm going to be watching Elevator to the Gallows again soon. Like Owl, I've seen it countless times, but this Mondo I picked up last week has me itching for it again.
