Also important to me is PQ. So which one of those titles would you recommend that are very pleasing to the eye PQ-wise but that will also be easy to understand for the unitiated?

But are they as good as Lawrence of Arabia?

I think Godzilla was my introduction to Japanese cinema, followed closely by Seven Samurai. I then pretty much immediately picked up Ran. Grabbed Rashomon much more recently and I think that's actually the extent of it for me.

not debating the merits of the cinematography, but I feel that I've seen many older films on Blu-ray that were as good / maybe better 'at home' viewing experiences than Lawrence of Arabia based on PQ and other visual aesthetic.

I have a lowly plasma, but I must confess that Lawrence of Arabia looks incredible. I was absolutely floored when I watched this on Blu-Ray.
