didn't realize The Magnificent Ambersons is a digi-pack. I ordered it from B&N, received it in the mail and here I am - I've lived to tell about it. made it to me in perfect condition.

If you are into horror/ghost stories I'd highly recommend Kwaidan. Very creepy film with some amazing sets.

If you want to do your TV and eyes a favor, Ran, Dreams and Kagemusha.

Overall Criterion has a great selection of JP films, chambara or not

If you think Yakuza is your thing or are interested(you should be) I would check out first Battles without Honor and Humanity by Arrow Video. It's a classic.
Well I don't want too much of an abrupt cultural shock
Also important to me is PQ. So which one of those titles would you recommend that are very pleasing to the eye PQ-wise but that will also be easy to understand for the unitiated?

I am more into palace intrigue, honor, pride, and the occasional huge battles among enemy kingdoms

But are they as good as Lawrence of Arabia?

I think Godzilla was my introduction to Japanese cinema, followed closely by Seven Samurai. I then pretty much immediately picked up Ran. Grabbed Rashomon much more recently and I think that's actually the extent of it for me.

Ran is on my wishlist. Just pacing my trigger finger a little while longer.

Something for the eyes? Are you region free or B capable? then the Ran 4K restoration.

If not Kagemusha and Dreams from criterion. Beautiful films.

I know. He tries to compare everything to that regardless of decade, director, DP and filmstock. Not to mention “wow this is almost 4K quality!”

I am multi-region (modded BD player)

4K-ish is the word I like to use these days

not debating the merits of the cinematography, but I feel that I've seen many older films on Blu-ray that were as good / maybe better 'at home' viewing experiences than Lawrence of Arabia based on PQ and other visual aesthetic.

I have a lowly plasma, but I must confess that Lawrence of Arabia looks incredible. I was absolutely floored when I watched this on Blu-Ray.
