Criterion does seem to have a thing for Howard Hawks.

I'd love to see Criterion release any of the following in 2019:

Ordinary People
After Hours
You Can Count on Me
Seven Men from Now
The Spirit of the Beehive
Out of the Blue (1980)
The Naked Spur
Atlantic City
Hud
Prince of the City

I'm also hoping the long-rumored Klute finally gets released next year.

I’ve been trying to buy all Best Picture winners on blu-ray for... 11 years now. Beginning to feel like the remainder are never gonna show, though, given studio disinterest in discs anymore. Boutique labels would appear to be our last best hope. Hence my interest in knowing what Criterion actually has rights to/has its eyes on. I’ll let Hamlet on iTunes pass and continue crossing my fingers for a Criterion upgrade.

Bought ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ on iTunes yesterday, though, because it is also MIA, the price was great ($4.99 CAD), and I’ve really lost hope on that one. Going this route feels like a defeat, though, and I’ll be thrilled to replace it with a blu-ray the moment it should ever become available.

For me, it's the fact that the "Average Joe" is increasingly streaming Netflix and "buying" stuff from iTunes (and its okay that everyone isn't obsessed with movies like the majority of folks here are). The thing is, that majority out there is killing physical media...and it slowly has been, more so with each passing year.

If, in the future, a company like iTunes suddenly let us download our "purchases" to a flash drive, then we would still have the physical media that we could simply plug into our monitors and own it and watch it forever...but that's just the problem. The movie studios don't want private consumers to own "their" film catalogs. They don't think we should have any ownership like we do now with our physical shiny discs.

So, slowly but surely, streaming will most likely end up being the way we get to see our films...and when you "buy" a streaming video, the corporate folks will decide when it's time to "discontinue" streaming their films...After all, they'll own 'em, not us.

But, although this "streaming" phenomenon is progressing, the bright side is that there is still enough demand for Blu-rays and 4Ks in that they won't be going away anytime soon...but for those of us that want to be able to pop in a nice physical shiny disc, and own it, and enjoy it whenever we please, we have to start realizing how precious those things are RIGHT NOW, while we still have 'em !!

I just hope that somebody releases the majority of my favorite films in Hi-Def within the next few years...because that may be all the time we have left.

Speaking of upgrades, I wonder if Criterion will ever release a blu ray of David Lean's Oliver Twist (1948). I watched this on AMC the other night and holy crap, parts of it are like watching a horror film.....

No doubt. It may be easy to overlook, but horror is a very common and palpable aspect of the Dickensian structure. I’d love to see an upgrade of Great Expectations too.

Yes, a David Lean adapts Charles Dickens pack with Oliver Twist and Great Expectations would be nice.

There was speculation that the skeleton in the last New Year's drawing referred to Grant's character's pseudonym, Mr. Bone, especially since a dog was beside it, but since BUB didn't come this year, it's possible/kinda assumed they were separate clues for Dead Man and The Awful Truth.
