Paprika would be cool if they did a 4K release of it since I'm still happy with my old Blu-Ray copy of it. Waking Life needs an HD release in the US for once (I know Arrow release it in the UK). I guess it was released by Fox Searchlight Pictures, will probably make it hard for a Criterion release.

With Disney owning Fox, I guess other movies like The Fly (1986) and The Day the Earth Stood Still (2001) may not get the Criterion treatment either.

Well Disney lets Criterion have Straw Dogs and the Wes Anderson/Alfred Hitchcock films they have the rights to, so anything's in the realm of possibility.

Hell, I'm STILL surprised that a Criterion Breakfast Club exists since that's one of the more high profile Universal catalog titles!

Main Disney label movies are the ones to worry about despite them all technically being Disney. At least that's how I feel regarding it.

Saw a screening of THE PRIVATE LIFE OF HENRY VIII last night at MOMA and it started with a Janus logo. Forgive me if this is repeat information.

Ah! Gotcha.

It was the premiere of a brand new restoration, so maybe the film will be escaping the Eclipse purgatory.

I’ve been watching movies on Kanopy, check it out, and I watched Viridiana and I’m still confused about the role of the beggars in the dinner scene. I’m sure it’s suppose to symbolize the Last Supper but I feel like there’s something else Buñuel is trying to comment on.

Moore's style seems more in line with Orson Welles' essay-documentary work like F for Fake and Filming Othello.

Comparing him to Riefenstahl is idiotic considering Triumph of the Will was commissioned by its subject and essentially an ad for the Nazi party. While I think Moore's methods are often questionable, it's not like his films don't bring up important social issues. But I think a sensational approach can dilute the message because people end up being more focused on Moore being an ******* to Charlton Heston than the insanity of many gun issues.

Where to Invade Next

Just kidding, but Michael Moore does turn a corner with this movie IMO. It represents a more mature approach compared to his earlier films, which were often manipulative and sensationalistic for the sake of it.

Anyway, to seriously answer your question, here are my picks. Note: For the most part, this is pure wishlist stuff that will likely never happen.

Double Indemnity: Film noir classic. No explanation required. Has a pretty good Blu already though (at least from what I've heard).

House of Games: Criterion had this before, I believe, but not on Blu.

A Bronx Tale: Robert De Niro's most underrated film and performance? A star-making turn for Chazz Palminteri.

Frailty: Underrated masterpiece directed by and starring the late, great Bill Paxton

Trucker: I re-watched this Michelle Monaghan movie the other night and was once again struck by how quietly powerful it is. Doesn't even have a pressed Blu-ray, looks like crap on Hoopla, and even worse on Prime streaming (aspect ratio looks seriously off on Prime). Not sure if much can be done to remaster it.

And for the hell of it, I'll throw in these two as the pinnacle of '90s action. If Armageddon can get a Criterion, why not these? (No chance in hell, but it's fun to dream...)

Total Recall (1990): Even though there are a hundred cheap Blu-ray editions of this already, I'd love to see Arnie's masterpiece get the Criterion treatment.

Demolition Man: The Razzies have no credibility. I'll defend every aspect of this movie, especially the acting and writing.

Outside of obvious stuff we know is coming (remaining Chaplin, Lloyd, Kurosawa, Ozu, etc) - my biggest titles are the long-unavailable MGM silents owned by Warner Bros. like Greed, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, The Crowd, and The Wind. I'd also love to see them do a comprehensive Norman McLaren set since his films have been out of print for nearly a decade in the US and NFB Canada has gorgeous new restorations only on their website.

As for upgrades:

Any Powell & Pressburger (especially I Know Where I'm Going!, A Canterbury Tale, 49th Parallel, and if they got them back from StudioCanal, The Small Back Room and Tales of Hoffmann)
The Testament of Dr. Mabuse
Pandora's Box
Von Sternberg silents (especially if they can add back the Gaylord Carter scores for The Last Command and Docks of New York)
Green for Danger
Mr. Arkadin
The Thief of Bagdad '40

Little's changed since last time I posted my wishlist last.
  • Altered States (folks brought this up before for some reason, would love to see it happen though)
  • Bringing Out the Dead
  • Come Drink with Me
  • Dancer in the Dark (might not look so great in HD, but I still want it)
  • Eisenstein Sound Years upgrade (Ivan the Terrible / Alexander Nevsky)
  • The Elephant Man
  • eXistenZ
  • Fahrenheit 451
  • Ferris Bueller's Day Off (wasn't this creditably rumored at some point?)
  • Funny Games (1998) (sounds like this one is likely)
  • Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai
  • The House That Jack Built (director's cut)
  • Irreversible
  • Lost Highway
  • Memories of Murder
  • The Princess and the Warrior
  • Ran (4K remastered)
  • Romeo and Juliet (1968)
  • Slaughterhouse-Five
  • The Stepford Wives (1975)
  • Until the End of the World (it's been years since this was hinted at. Come on already!)
  • What About Bob?
  • World Cinema Project Volume 3
  • More Kurosawa films (a nice box set would be nice, otherwise I'd probably jump on Stray Dog or Red Beard)
  • The big Godzilla box set (sounds likely)

Not sure if these are realistic because I dunno if Criterion have the rights, but still...

Yimou Zhang's Red Sorghum and To Live
Kaige Chen's Yellow Earth
Buñuel's Diary of a Chambermaid (StudioCanal?) and The Phantom of Liberty (upgrade)
Godard's A Woman Is a Woman and Made in USA (upgrades)
Kurosawa's Red Beard, Drunken Angel, and Stray Dog (upgrades), Dersu Uzala
Rosselini's The Flowers of St. Francis (upgrade)
Costa-Gavras' Z (upgrade)
Glauber Rocha collection

Among myriad others I don't remember right now.

Bad Timing (Blu upgrade)
Ryan’s Daughter
Raise the Red Lantern
Some Hou Hsiang-hsien

I couldn’t agree more. Shaming and name calling, as typified by many politicians and talk show hosts especially, is getting completely out of hand. They are validating this kind of behavior, and it is spreading like a contagious disease. Time for a change in direction for them and for our society. Shame on you and shame on the them!
