All they have to do is register their e-mail here and take a picture of their Driver's License or some other form of I.D. and they'll mail you a card. Hope this helps somebody, there's a lot of great stuff on the service including a ton of the Criterion Collection.
And all California residents can sign up for a San Francisco Public Library account, whether or not they reside in SF.

However, know that, in most instances, libraries are paying for each individual view via Kanopy. It's not a lump sum service for them. So for the sake of your library's budgets, view judiciously and intentionally.

Default The Soft Skin

I saw The Soft Skin on the UK Artificial Eye blu, but for anyone interested here's my view on the film itself:

If there is one thing that Jacques François (400 Blows) Truffaut's 1964 portrayal of a post-marital affair tells you, it is that infidelity is in practice difficult and stressful. When the middle-aged family man who is a celebrated literary figure (popular enough to fill halls and attract paparazzi, it would seem) decides to pursue his dalliances with the young stewardess he met on a flight it is, as imagined by Truffaut channeling his cinematic guru Hitchcock, an endeavor fraught with tension and danger. Finding a suitably remote rendezvous, devising an excuse to be there, avoiding acquaintances and hangers-on...it is such an exhausting exercise the lovers (and we the audience) wonder if it is worth the while.

The Soft Skin has its clumsy or less subtle moments too. The reaction of the man's wife when she gets wind of his tomfoolery is so schizophrenic you almost feel sympathetic towards the cad. A fine moment later in the film where he is rejected both by the wife and the lover, leaving him spiritually dead, makes the smoking gun climax feel even more tacked on and unnecessary. Still, the film comes recommended for its suspenseful depiction of the tricky mechanics of illicit passion, and probably serves as a better warning against such sin than mere preaching about morality.

It’s François Truffaut not, Jacques.

How can a site called "theyshootpictures" not include "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" in their top 1000 films.

Maybe because it's not that great of a film?

It’s a lot better than “Hatari!” and “New York, New York”.

To be fair, their yearly list is a representation of many best of lists. And I suspect that that film just doesn’t make many best of lists for whatever reason.

After my initial comment, I had read the “introduction” and they had stated that it was a compilation of other lists. Easy come, easy go.

There are a lot of headscratchers in the list for me personally. Any compilation isn't gonna satisfy your personal taste. I wouldn't have Fire Walk With Me as #1000 (MUCH higher), but that's just me.

Janus is touring an Abbas Kiarostami retrospective starting August 2nd at the IFC Center in New York:
Quote:
Janus Films presents a touring retrospective spanning the master’s career, including new restorations undertaken by the Criterion Collection and mk2 with the invaluable contribution of Ahmad Kiarostami. Additional touring dates to come.

“Abbas Kiarostami is one of the true poets of cinema, but his work has not always been easily accessible,” said Peter Becker, President of the Criterion Collection/Janus Films. “We couldn’t be prouder to be working with his son Ahmad and our partners at MK2 on these new restorations to reveal the full scope of his vision, from his wonderful, rarely-screened early children's films to the quietly majestic triumph of The Koker Trilogy."

Full retrospective includes:

I assume this will be 2019's "Ingmar Bergman's Cinema".

It is a subscription service for the library I work for, which has a limit of 6 films (aka 6 credits) a card holder can view per month. As long as they owe no late fees for physical items checked out, we set no other limits.

Good to know! I follow a media librarian listserv, and there have been several long discussions about Kanopy pricing/sustainability. I got the impression from there that your arrangement is in the minority, but I could easily be mistaken.

I wonder why Kiarostami's Certified Copy and Like Someone in Love are missing from the retrospective?

Also absent is The Report (1977).

IFC has the rights to Certified Copy and Like Someone in Love. Don't know about The Report.
