Is there any new extras on this release than the previous Lionsgate one? I'm almost certain there's a better PQ. I might have to pick this up since its Region Free.
Yes it is.

The only extras missing on the new SC disc from the LG release are "Third Man Interactive Tour" and the two trailers.

That's not so bad. The only things that I fear are anything that has the ability to slither / crawn inside my toilet and bite me on the scrotum while I'm taking a midnight dump.

That can mostly be avoided by not holidaying in Australia.

I can't see the first picture but the other three we don't have here (or not that big in the case of the spider). We make up for it by having other fun things like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, hurricanes, and tsunamis.

Especially because the other day I was reading the newspaper and there was an article about a guy and his emotional support alligator.

It's already -20 here, the wind makes it way worse. I guess I'll take that over giant spiders or alligators eating my little dog, though.

Think I'll spin this tonight, then follow it up with Jigoku

Yeah now that I try to see it on my phone it’s not showing up... it was just a picture of frozen Jack Torrance saying Why Do I Live Where The Air Hurts My Face?

Thanks to everyone who responded regarding favorite Criterion (or even non-Criterion) movies to watch on a frigid Winter night.

It surprises me just a tad that a majority of the responses included watching Winter-themed or cold-themed films rather than warm, hot Summer movies.

I ended up watching Midnight Cowboy last night and I hadn't seen this one in maybe 10 years. I can't get over just how "dirty" this movie is. Dirty in terms of the stench and foul settings where Ratso/Rizzo lives. Whenever the characters were lying on those dirty pillows with wet, sweaty heads, it just really brought out the decrepit filth of the impoverished conditions these characters were living in. I know very few movies that are as effective as this when it comes to literally "smelling" the human stink emanating from a film off of a TV screen. It almost made me squeamish in a way, where as I'm a bit of a hypochondriac, I wouldn't dare set foot in an abandoned NYC apartment building and expose myself to a
[Show spoiler]man dying of Pneumonia and live with him for weeks or months on end. The character "Ratso" has been written about so many times, but my take of him was that of a very tragic character.

In any case, its one amazing movie. Maybe not the kind of escape from Winter I was looking for, even though Florida was alluded to and of course shown throughout the film. But a movie like Midnight Cowboy makes me appreciate whatever good fortunes/destiny I do have compared to homeless people out there. NYC in the late 60's was a whole different animal compared to today of course, but if anything, there are more impoverished poor souls living on the streets these days where the temps go well below zero, and that makes me grateful for being a bit overweight and cozy indoors with heat while outside its an arctic wasteland.

I'm one of those types of people who likes to watch movies that match the environment, i.e. watching movies with winter settings when it's cold and snowy outside, and watching hot summery movies during the summer, that way I can at least get sucked into the idea that I'm closer to the characters, plus it kind of feels like a kick in the nuts watching someone having fun in the sun while it's -40 degrees outside.

I do this with holiday movies (ie. movies with Christmas in the story or something on Thanksgiving whenever the holidays come around, as opposed to watching a story that takes place during Christmas and watching it in the middle of July). And I'd agree its prob. along the lines of "misery loves company" when you're freezing your bum off and you're watching a Winter-themed film about people freezing to death (let's say the most bleakest/horrifying of all would be movies like Alive or The Thing) or Touching the Void (although that's a documentary about surviving on the Andes mountains)). Hell if you really want to go deep into the abyss, I love The Day After Tomorrow too. Of course you could always pick The Revenant, The Grey, or Fargo too (for snow and cold). And you can't forget those Donner Party movies either. But to me, the ultimate of frigid, frozen, snowy, bleak Winter stories has to do with John Franklin's doomed Northwest Passage expedition in the 1840s filled with cannibalism and horror (The Terror is fantastic).

Saw Preston Sturges' Unfaithfully Yours last night via the Criterion DVD. It's another Sturges winner with sharp writing and hopefully this will be upgraded at some point (although The Lady Eve should definitely be prioritised).

It never gets below zero in Georgia, but...

As far as non-Criterion goes, I recommend...

Is "-6 below zero" the same as "six above zero"?

This movie has recently become my new all time favorite. I saw it when I was younger and thought it was great, but rewatched it last year and appreciated it on many new levels. I've seen it three times in two years and I rarely do that. Excellent movie!
