Damn...Alice In The Cities.

That final shot gets me every time.

It just breaks my heart.

I’ll bet they never see each other again.

...life is a damn shame.

I gave Jean Renoir's The Rules of the Game another viewing 15 years after I first saw it.

On my previous viewing, which was in my early 20s, I liked it well enough but didn't really understand the acclaim. This time around, I enjoyed it a lot more, and understand its influence a lot better, but to a certain extent, I still don't understand the acclaim. The tone definitely works for the satirical parts but I am not sure it is all that successful for the dramatic parts.

Having said all of that, it's still a very enjoyable movie that has been terrifically put together and still seems modern in its approach some 80 years on. Would love to see a new 4k restoration as Criterion's blu ray is perfectly fine but unexceptional.

I was browsing through the Criterion list on Wikipedia and noticed the first 3 titles that aren't OOP and haven't been upgraded to blu-ray are all David Lean films. I wonder what the hold-up is?

Don't believe Amazon price-matches over the 24 hours. Our esteemed colleague and sale expert hariseldon may know more.
If I was a gambler, I'd wager that the sale will be Tuesday, February 26th, as it coincides with the restock of Ingmar Bergman's Cinema.

It's now showing a March 4 restock date.

Might be wanting to do another Lean box set. I can see them putting Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, The Passionate Friends, Hobson's Choice, and Summertime together since they're all adaptations of novels and plays.

Target does indeed have a "buy 2, get 1 free" promo which makes Criterions $20, and it works on pre-orders.

Then I hope that Criterion will allow backorders to be part of the sale!

That's a bargain! However at this stage of my purchasing Criterion Collection products, I will either wait for the B&N sale, where I can use my 10% off B&N Membership Card along with my 5% B&N MasterCard, or Criterion flash sales, where I can use my loyalty points. An standard blu-ray item would need to be under $17 at any other vendor for me to take the bait.

I can't imagine any other two actors who could pull it off with such exquisite impeccability.
YES... a thousand times YES. UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING is probably my "most wanted" Blu-ray at this point, since I've recently grabbed decent region-free imports of KNIFE IN THE WATER and TENDER MERCIES, and since I AM CUBA has already been announced for release. Just watched the Criterion dvd of UNBEARABLE again last week; such an amazing flick, with one of the most achingly beautiful endings in all cinema. If you don't feel something at the end of UNBEARABLE, you're not alive. Please Criterion, if you read these forums, count my vote for this exceptional example of pure "film as art".... hopefully with the more naturalistic color palette sported by the old Criterion dvd, rather than the yellowed MGM releases. (But I'll take it any way I can get it.)

Lean's adaptations of both OLIVER TWIST and GREAT EXPECTATIONS are the best versions of those classic novels by miles...they're long overdue for domestic release on Blu.

And count me among those who'd love to see THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING get a Criterion upgrade on Blu, it may well be Philip Kaufman's best film; Kaufman's name isn't usually invoked when talking about great American filmmakers, but it sure as hell ought to be.

A new 4k restoration of The Unbearable Lightness of Being played at the London Film Festival last year
Quote:
A new restoration by the Academy Film Archive and The Film Foundation, with funding provided by the George Lucas Family Foundation, provides a welcome opportunity to revisit Philip Kaufman's acclaimed adaptation of Milan Kundera's novel, THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING (1988) - one of the most ambitious American films of the 1980s.

Yeah, I've been surprised not to see the Lean/Dickens films not upgraded. That's been something I kind of anticipated many years back. I would love for them to get the bump.

Bergman's The Rite is something else. Pair it with The Hour of the Wolf and you're in for an unforgettable double bill.

Anyone else having issues playing Chungking Express or any of its related extras on the Criterion Channel?

On the VHX Roku app, I get a brief loading screen before being booted back to the menu.

On my web browser, I get an inaccurate screen that says, "Sorry, this video cannot be played while your device is connected to this external monitor" (it isn't).

Mikey and Nicky played flawlessly on the Roku VHX app last week.
