Question June guesses

Does anyone have any good guesses about what films Criterion might have in store for June?

Here are some titles I would love to see (with better remasters):

Annie Hall (1977)
Bringing Up Baby (1938)
Chinatown (1974)
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
The Last Picture Show (1971) (a standalone version)

My Criterion Blu-ray of White Material had a freeze glitch earlier this week, preventing me from getting my full Isabelle Huppert fix during the week that I went to see Greta at the theater, so I backed up 10 yards, punted, and pulled this one from my Blu-ray stack...

Erika Kohut, an esteemed piano professor and Schubert expert played by Isabelle Huppert, exudes an emotionless countenance while educating her students at the the Vienna Conservatory and presides over lessons with unyielding strictness, never hesitating to pierce the emotions of her virtuosos-in-training with cruel barbs. Her commanding facade of exactness and meticulous professionalism, however, belies her own inner wounds. Despite the fact that she is in her late forties, she lives with her intrusively doting mother, played by Annie Girardot, in an apartment, where the two of them even sleep in the same bedroom. Her sexual repression manifests itself in discreet ways as she visits seedy areas around the city, watches hardcore pornography, engages in voyeuristic behavior, and even practices self-mutilation.

Walter, a young engineering student and talented pianist played by Benoît Magimel, enters the scene, refusing to be intimidated by the older teacher's icy manner. When this handsome student begins to show an uncanny romantic interest in her, Erika's self-assured exterior begins to unravel into displays of sadomasochism and sociopathy.

I first became acquainted with the Austrian director, Michael Haneke, by way of his 2005 film, Caché, a Hitchcock-inspired outing with a pivotal scene that elicited the most visibly shocked reaction that I have ever seen from a theater audience. From there, I jumped headfirst into several of his other works, including the haunting post-apocalyptic tale, Time of the Wolf (2003), the visually spectacular black-and-white movie, The White Ribbon (2009), and even the intensely disturbing 1997 feature, Funny Games, and its 2007 American remake, which he also helmed.

Haneke's 2001 psychological thriller, The Piano Teacher, which is based on a 1983 novel by Elfriede Jelinek, remains one of the most uncomfortable films that I have ever seen in my life, although my only other viewing was over a decade ago, and it is a striking representation of the director's talent for creating the cinematic equivalent of a roadkill from which a passerby cannot avert his or her eyes. This is not a viscerally graphic movie, save for one early moment of videotape footage in a private room of an adult shop, but the sheer escalating unpleasantness of character interactions yields a more repulsed reception. There is one act of malice in this film during a music rehearsal where no overt violence is shown on the screen, but its aftertaste lingers in my psyche long after bloody images from countless zombie movies and slasher films have passed from memory. Haneke's coldly effective approach pulls us through the fold by way of long static camera shots that proceed without the flourishes of music score manipulation or flashy cinematography to buffer us from what we are seeing.

Fortunately, a spectacular beauty perseveres amidst the unpleasantness. Years ago, when I was walking out of the theater after the conclusion of Haneke's The White Ribbon, an elderly stranger who was exiting at the same time made eye contact with me, and said, “That was pure cinematic art.” The same can be said of this movie. Huppert is entrancing in one of the bravest performances that this longtime moviegoer has seen, and her two primary co-stars match her every step of the way. I am also drawn to this film's unapologetically erudite focus on the piano lessons themselves, and I wish that I had more of a natural music aptitude that might help me sense parallels between the sounds and the story that may be hidden from my attention right now.

A good movie does not necessarily have to be one that makes the viewer feel good. In fact, some of the best films that I have seen in my life are ones that make me want to curl into a fetal position in the corner of my living room for a month. The Piano Teacher is one such example, and, if you have never ventured into the world of Haneke, then it is a decently accessible entry point.

This Criterion Blu-ray excels with pitch-perfect video and audio presentations. The Haneke interview, where the director is not quite as maddeningly ambiguous as he sometimes can be, is my favorite supplement, but I also enjoyed the select-scene Huppert commentaries and the Huppert interview.
After reading Owl's excellent review here, I need to see this film!

See, this is why I come to this forum (and others) to read top notch, insightful reviews like Owl's. Many of these films would certainly fly under the radar for me if it weren't for people like Owl and a select few reviewers.

Hats off to you sir! Keep 'em coming!

We can be pretty sure Hedwig is coming, if John Cameron Mitchell is to be believed, though I suppose it's possible he meant June announcement instead of June release.

That's exactly it. I didn't make any change to my shipping preference. My larger order is being sent via UPS ground, and will be here tomorrow. It shipped from Louisville, KY and is already in Ft. Worth:

Dietrich & von Sternberg in Hollywood and 8 individual titles.

My second, smaller order, which utilized my $50 gift certificate, was sent via USPS. It, too, shipped from the Louisville, KY distribution center, and will be here Saturday:

David Lean Directs Noël Coward and 3 individual titles.

And, my Hammer Horror 8-Film Collection will be here tomorrow from Amazon.

I'm going to be seriously perplexed trying to decide what to watch this weekend. 29 new movies to choose from, a stack of unwatched blus as high as the Empire State Building, and a DVR chock full of as of yet unwatched movies. But what a wonderful dilemma to have.

I thought CHINATOWN looked okay, but I read online that there is a 4K restoration of the film. Since this year is the film's 45th anniversary, a Criterion release or Paramount release might happen.

this bergman box might really be the greatest home video release ever. packaging, content, the extra book. they really put did themselves.

it is bigger than you expect. no joke, it's probably the size of a vcr. a littler bigger than the blade runner voight kampff case for the 25th anniversary.

the slipbox is nicer than I expected. I flipped through that book, and that really seems like the kind of book you'd pay $30 or more at a bookstore.

the zatochi box is nice, but that's relatively small. this box is huge. you will need a separate, custom size shelf for this.

I haven't even jumped into the movies yet. we see all these elaborate boxes for single movies and to think this behemoth as 39 movies in it is staggering.

really, anyone who loves movies and the history of movies and wants to get more into "art movies" should snatch this up. this should be the first thing you order at the next flash or barnes and noble sale.

Chinatown looks good but it could be a lot better with a fresh 2K or 4K scan.

if they reissue it would it only be the same or would it have new extra features and a higher resolution?

I have it with the original case and was wondering if the reissue would change anything.

Today bought Secret Sunshine, and blind-bought Burning. I like to think interest in Burning might inspire a resurgence in interest/sales for Secret Sunshine, Criterion's one and only Korean release, and then maybe Criterion will consider doing more Korean releases. (Not that there's a dearth of Korean films on English-friendly blu-ray, thanks to imports, and labels like KOFA whose releases are 100% Criterion's equal...) It's an older title and I haven't seen anyone talking about it recently, but hey, it's sold out in the 12 hours since I ordered it, so I can't be the only one buying it today.
Criterion has also released one other Korean film, Kim Ki Young's awesome over the top melodrama The Housemaid(1960), though that film was released in the WCP #1 boxset and was not given it's own separate release. I totally agree with you though that Criterion should definitely release more Korean films, especially any films that don't already have a region A Korean release or any film that KOFA is not planning on releasing themselves. I would also love to see more of Lee Chang-dong's film released on Blu-ray by Criterion.

I was gonna finally buy Secret Sunshine during the flash sale but decided to wait for the next sale. It's great to see that it sold out during the sale as the film is absolutely terrific, one of the hidden gems of the Criterion Collection. Do-yean Jeon's acting is so intense, especially the depiction of her grief and her use of religion as a panacea for her grief. Her performance is easily one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema, imo. Plus any film with Kang-ho Song in it is always worth watching. Secret Sunshine is definitely not a film I could revisit often because of just how intense and emotionally draining it can be to watch but when I am in the right mood, I know I will be completely blown away by the film every time.

A re-issue would likely be part of a WKW box. I don't believe Criterion has ever re-issued a blu (Packaging updates aside) without adding new content or including it as part of a boxed set (e.g. Monterey Pop, Seventh Seal, Play Time).

New 4K master. Rumor is Criterion has been working on creating new 4K masters for a number of WKW's films. (At least one of them, In the Mood for Love, has already played a film festival.)

Oh, I knew about The Housemaid, but wasn't counting it as a "Korean release" for the reason you mentioned. I was lucky to come across a cheap copy of the OOP Korean blu-ray of Lee Chang-dong's Peppermint Candy while I was in Seoul last year, but that's really hard to get a hold of now, and there's no denying that film, or even the readily available Oasis, ought to be released in the West (and there's room for improvement with the subtitles on those releases too). If Criterion put those films out, they'd be two of the best films Criterion's released in a long while.

Meanwhile, a film like Aimless Bullet, which I think is as important and essential a classic of world cinema as any of Criterion's flagship titles, I think could use the exposure that a Criterion release would bring. But for me, yeah, it would be a redundant release, especially since the KOFA version already feels Criterion-level (with an English-friendly booklet and everything). So I'd prefer anything that doesn't already have an English-friendly release. Which is not nothing. (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring anyone?)
