All fair points, but I'm less charitable than you in my assessment of this film nowadays. To me it strikes me as a bit of a con by a man with out of date ideas about violence and cinema who doesn't really understand why people watch horrors/thrillers to begin with.

Denying 'catharsis' does not produce insight. I'd say it has the complete opposite effect.

Honestly, Wes Craven's New Nightmare demonstrated a more sophisticated understanding of the role of horror films in contemporary culture than Funny Games.

I like this observation. I'm not 100% on board, but New Nightmare is a surprisingly insightful film about the genre.

I gave Funny Games a favorable star review on my Letterboxd not for its supposed deep meanings, but more for the effectiveness of its scenes that do fall into the horror genre suspense parameters.

Despite my sensing what is going to happen in the movie (even during my initial viewing), I still find myself worried for the protagonists. That's a good thing.

I might be alone, but I thought Heather Langenkamp was hot in New Nightmare. Legs for miles.

That's what I like about this film. There is no happy ending, and there is no audience catered to. Sure, I still find myself cheering for the protagonists even upon rewatches, but the film is very sastifying to me in the direction that it takes.

I've never seen the original version, but I do really enjoy the remake, quite a bit. It's just a magnificent film. When I show it to people, I like to see the disappointing look on their face when there is no resolve given.

As for the Criterion blu-ray, I'll be picking it up during the next Barnes and Noble sale.

Heather Langenkamp routinely shows up at horror conventions, so be sure to check the lineup if there are any yearly conventions near you.

Don't think it's been mentioned, but it looks like Insomnia is getting a BD-only release in August.

It would be nice if Criterion adds some movies from Kinji Fukasaku. Under the Flag of the Rising Sun would be perfect for Criterion.

Can we expect Criterion to release titles featuring Jean Harlow and Veronica Lake in the future?

Most of his work is already well represented by Arrow. Being Toho its most likely going to come from Arrow as they release most of their stuff.

Langenkamp is hot in everything she's in. Always thought she was a stunner, riding the line between kittens-in-a-basket cute and brow sweat-inducingly sexy. Hopefully NICKEL MOUNTAIN will finally get a BD release one day so everyone can see Langenkamp's still-celebrated nude scenes in glorious HD. Love that woman.

I've been Tweeting Criterion to distribute Libeled Lady for some time. I'd love to see them get Dinner at Eight, too.

I can't decide if Warner Archive releasing Gaslight themselves gives me more or less hope for a lesser-known dramatic Cukor...
