Has there been any word of more films from that set being released individually? I'd like to get the upgrade of Cries and Whispers and Passion of Anna.

If one or both of these come courtesy of Shout/Scream instead at some point, that'd be great too.

Blu upgrades of either ONIBABA or JIGOKU would be sweet as well.
or, Haxan too.

For Kurosawa, my next samurai film after Seven Samurai would be Yojimbo. But if you want to go outside of Kurosawa, I like The Samurai Trilogy & Three Outlaw Samurai. And for modern, Samurai Fiction

I just wish we could get Dersu Uzala

That set was worth every damned penny.

I just saw Dreams for the first time more recently and it's tied for fifth place in my list of films I find the most interesting from him.

1)Rashoman
2)The Bad Sleep Well
3) High and Low
4) Ikiru
5) The Hidden Fortress tied w/ Dreams

As important as he was to the development of action cinema, he's one of those popular directors that I never grew to really like after I voraciously watched all of his stuff.

Finally saw the Lubitsch Musicals set and loved them. Really hoping Criterion gives them (and other movies in the Eclipse series) Blu Ray upgrades!

There is no bad Kurosawa. But you definitely need to add at least High and Low, Rashomon, Stray Dog, Red Beard, Ran and The Bad Sleep Well to the titles above.

I know this is an older problem but who else on here has dealt with the bronzing Criterions? These are the 7 titles that I have found so far that will need to be replaced. I saw a master list and these two are not even mentioned: Kagemusha and 8 1/2. The other bad discs I have so far are: Walkabout, Monsoon Wedding, M, Revanche and Paris, Texas. I went through a chunk of my collection from that time period and checked about 30 discs. Just curious what the experiences are of some of you who have went through this same ordeal and what other titles to look out for. Thanks!

Last year I found out my Stagecoach was seemingly okay (no bronzing) but the bonus film Bucking Broadway went freeze at a certain point. I knew it's not on the bronzing list but still asked about it to Jon Mulvaney at Criterion.

Here's his answer.

Quote:
I hope this email finds you well, although I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble with your STAGECOACH Blu-ray! This title is one that could have been affected by the disc rot, and although it isn't on the original list, please go ahead and send it in for a replacement. We don't have a shipping policy for replacement discs other than you pay to ship it to us and we pay to ship back your replacement. I've posted the instructions below:

We have confirmed that certain Blu-ray discs pressed at a replication facility that we used for a period in 2010 have become defective, showing a noticeable bronze discoloration on the underside and developing playback problems. We have confirmed the problem on ten titles, but not on all copies of these titles. All of these titles have since been re-pressed at a different pressing plant, and the vast majority of discs in circulation should not be affected.

The confirmed potentially affected Blu-ray titles are:

SUMMER HOURS
WALKABOUT
PARIS, TEXAS
M
THE SEVENTH SEAL
PIERROT LE FOU
HOWARDS END
MONSOON WEDDING
MONTEREY POP
RIDE WITH THE DEVIL

If you have found that your Blu-ray copy of one of these titles does not play, please send your disc in to the following address for a replacement:

The Criterion Collection
Attn: Jon Mulvaney
215 Park Avenue South
5th floor
New York, NY 10003

Please include only your disc -- no packaging -- along with the address to which you'd like us to mail your replacement. We will not be replacing or exchanging packaging. There is no need to email us in addition.

If you decide not to send in a disc that is playing fine and it starts to show signs of the defect at a later date, we will be happy to exchange your disc at that time. If we learn that other titles are similarly defective, we will add them to the list and continue to replace them as well (excluding discs that are out of print that aren't listed above). The best way to tell if your disc from the list is defective is by looking on the under side of the disc (the shiny side) and if you see the letters 'BVDL' your disc will be fine. If you don't see those letters you should send in your disc.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

Jon Mulvaney
I thought their policy was reasonable enough. But unfortunately, I didn't live in the US and considering the international shipping cost, it would be better off buying a new one at B&N sale anyway, so I did.

Thanks for that post. I got a similar email to that last year but was unable at that time to go through all of my discs and such. Now that I have the time and ability, I am going through them and discovering all of the bad discs. Just trying to cover as much of the scope as possible. I also know that I have the original Eraserhead disc that I never had them swap for the one not missing footage. I also have the Carlos set but can't find the information related to the exchange for that one. Thank you once again! If anyone else has any experiences with these issues and exchanging, I would like to hear from you.
Thanks!

I have a feeling that I want my next several film purchases just to be Criterion. It feels as if they have a catalog so diverse and expansive that it could keep me occupied for a long time.

how many of the copies for Monsoon Wedding has the disc rot? I've not played mine in about 2 years as it is in storage but it played fine before I packed it up.

I believe it was an audio issue with one of the discs. I'm not 100% certain and still researching it. I would like to take care of all of my problematic discs in one exchange with Criterion, but I'm not certain I will be able to. Sitting on the fence of whether to send in all of the listed discs, regardless of whether they play now or not. Looking to get a magnifying glass today in order to read the pressing numbers on the discs to make the final call.

The Carlos issue is with the second disc. I just bumped the thread on it. As far as Monsoon Wedding goes, there is no telling how many bad discs are out there. The problem with the bronzing is that it seems to happen over time. My Paris, Texas worked not all that long ago and now will only play maybe half the movie. A week from now it might just load up the C and then choke out. Who knows!

So predictions for Spine 1000?

Mine are:

Citizen Kane
Pulp Fiction
Eyes Wide Shut
Akira Kurasawa Box Set

My hope and dream- A Kubrick box set without every film having its own individual cases kinda like how The Before Trilogy is. Those paper cases for each film. I would freaking die.
