Heh, funny thing is the Godzilla franchise is filled with social and political commentary. Many of them even manage to be "message movies" and deliver mindless action and contain comedic elements at the same time.

This isn't directed at MifuneFan, whom I know is a Godzilla fan and knows that as well as anyone. More the people who genuinely do think that not a single one of these movies have anything to offer but camp and general goofiness.

My only wish for spine #1000 is that it's not just a re-issue of something already widely available on blu. As long as it's new, it's fine with me.

Can’t stand the Criterion Forum. But that’s another story

So if Spine 100” isn’t Godzilla what could it be that would cause another weeks delay.

I’m still gonna tell myself it’s a Kubrick boxset and if I’m right I’m officially a wizard!

The only Godzilla movie I've ever seen is the terrible Bryan Cranston-Aaron Taylor-Johnson version.

What's wrong with it? I signed up a few months ago and it seems fine.

Definitely some buffoonish snobbery at times, but the same can be said for this thread periodically.

Edit: Are we talking about the official Criterion Forum (does one exist?) or criterionforum.org?

Thanks! I'm wrong anyway in the sense that some people thought the sled in the New Year's drawing was for Citizen Kane too, so that can be considered rumor territory as well, even though it's pretty much confirmed to be for Bamboozled. I'm not sure if the one you linked to was discussed on here, either way I missed it.

I don't really see a point in doing Citizen Kane unless they put out a UHD, and I'd be surprised if Warner didn't want to do that themselves. We know Criterion has the Eyes of Orson Welles documentary, and also The Other Side of the Wind too I believe, so I don't know if they plan a big Orson Welles set, perhaps including Mr Arkadin as well.

Yeah, I have to say, if it genuinely did turn out to be Citizen Kane, that'd be underwhelming.

Great, great film, but it also already has a great Blu-ray release courtesy of Warners.

I am only interested in a Godzilla set. While there a few films in the Criterion library that I enjoy and own most are just too highbrow for me. I don't care if the Godzilla set is 1000 or not as long as we get it released.

I have to admit though, I was slightly underwhelmed after I saw the 2 upgrades and 2 new titles coming out in October. I do like John Sayles as a filmmaker and Matewan will be a curious pick for me. Häxan is another title that has intrigued me for a while and I nearly bought the Criterion DVD. I also like the M. Ali Documentary as a possible blind buy.

On the flip side, that gives people more time and continues the suspense of guessing what spine # 1000 will be. Most here think it will be the Godzilla box set, but I'm hoping for something completely out of left field that nobody saw coming.

Yup. British snobs who laughed at the Jackie Chan release. They respect Japanese samurai movies but Hong Kong action cinema? Too low brow for them.

It wouldn't be the first Criterion studio licence that felt a bit pointless, but I think they would take a different approach to a release than Warner who some nice background extras on their release but nothing really new and Ebert is the only critic represented. I'm sure they could cook something up about Toland's cinematography, Herrmann's score, the Welles/Mankiewicz writing debate, and such like.

And, as you mention, they have The Eyes of Orson Welles and there's a load of other stuff that they could potentially licence that don't necessarily pertain to Kane specifically such as the BBC's outstanding The Orson Welles Story documentary, The Hearts of Age, or any of the 'Unknown Orson Welles' material that the Munich Film Museum has kept close to its chest up until now.

I agree here. Plus the rumor said they would announce something re their plans at Comic-Con not necessarily that there would be a box set announced if I remember correctly. UHD would mean they have to decide on packaging and stuff which could take extra time

Really curious how Haxen comes out in HD. The quality of the print on the DVD is not really that good at all.

Nice to finally be able to retire my Josef von Sternberg set. Amazing set for anyone interested.

Either Toho announces it over the weekend with criterion announcing a full breakdown on Monday, or the trailer that’s been edited together isn’t Godzilla related but clips from various Criterion titles which leads to the announcement of spine 1000...
