Nice to finally be able to retire my Josef von Sternberg set. Amazing set for anyone interested.
An HD HAXAN is news! But this one really deserves a better score than was included on the DVD.

The "Music from the original Danish premiere" is haphazardly placed constantly working against what's on screen IMO and throws the whole thing out of whack.

It really does. One of the rare examples of me being rewarded for holding off. That is until I consider that the money I didn't spend on Häxan was about what I spent on Soul Power - the doc that's included with When We Were Kings. I can't win, dammit.

Very intrigued about Haxan. I'm gonna watch it on the channel to see if it warrants a purchase.

Def in for HAXAN (been years waiting!) and I'll check out MATEWAN. The Sternberg upgrade is a little too rich for me. No interest in the doc.

Soft on my wallet with is fine by me (I was 5/5 in September). Plus whatever #1000 is going to end up being.

I would definitely like #1000 to be their foray into 4K. Considering their historic and long commitment to video quality (including manufacturing Laserdiscs when many studios were fine with just VHS), you'd think they should be the first ones to truly embrace the format. Also, the majority of the 4K market are going to continue to be collectors and video/audiophiles.

Well that's underwhelming. Not just because there's nothing Kaiju related, but just because none of these movies really interest me based on their descriptions. I'm sure they are good, but not for me. I was hoping for some more unreleased Hitchcock or another Noir. Oh well, maybe next month.

I didn't realize the Von Sternberg set was $100. That is a bit on the high side for 3 films with not too many extras. The Dietrich / Von Sternberg set for instance is $125 and that has 6 films, and lots of extras including 2 new documentaries. It'll of course be $50 during the November B&N sale (or maybe for Criterion's Flash sale), but I assumed the set would be about $79.99 or so.

You must've ignored the mention about next week's announcement...

We know the trailer is a super-montage of the entire collection, as Jonathan Keogh tweeted that he was working on such a trailer in mid-June.

Hot damn! Haxan AND 3 Silent Films By Josef Von Sternberg being upgraded?? That alone is enough to make this month a big success!
In for Matewan too as it looks good. Hopefully the Ali documentary will come on the Criterion channel so I can give it a watch.

The MSRP matched the BRD Trilogy set, and DVD version of 3 Silent Classics was already $79.99 (even though it's OOP). In that regard the $99.99 MSR makes sense, even if I will also be waiting for the 50% sale. (Fortunately, since the DVD is still OOP I may be able to still get a decent price selling it to some SD locked collector).

I really wanted "I Walked with a Zombie" this year for their October release. Perhaps Shout Factory will release it. "Onibaba" deserves an American Blu-ray release.

I can't believe that "Raise the Red Lantern" and "The Elephant Man" haven't been released on Blu-ray in America.

Was never too big on the Docks of New York although I really want to see Underworld at some point. Still quite new to Josef von Strenberg's works, but I plan on watching the Blue Angel tonight.

Will defintely get Haxan at some point

Well, the BRD set has a lot more extras. Commentary tracks for each film, lots of interviews, a feature-length documentary and so forth. I think the price is justified there. This new set has 6 scores, one interview, and 2 video essays, not that much content in comparison.

$99 seems to be the standard Criterion price for 3-film box sets, which is why I haven't bought too many of them. Maybe there will be a Black Friday deal on the von Sternberg silent set. Even at 50% off, it's still a little rich for me.

By contrast, the Classic Hitchcock 4-film set lists for $95. Go figure.

Nothing for me from today's announcements.

Thankfully, with so many Criterion in my wish list there are plenty of titles I don't yet have and look forward to picking up in time.

Haxen is foundational fantasy film, as influential as Jean Coteau's Beauty and the Beast. Def day one for me!

The DVD set was high as well (even before it went OOP). It might have also been $99.99 originally. Considering I'm a cheapass, I dont' know how I ever ended up owning that DVD set (I believe I even bought it after I was well into the blu-ray era of collecting). But the films really are amazing. I encourage anyone with even a slight inkling to watch silent cinema to get this box set.

I dumped my DVD set last year because I heard a rumor these might be coming, so I'll definitely be upgrading these to blu. I was counting on it, actually.

Very happy to see that those three Von Sternberg movies are getting upgraded! I no longer have to look for the overpriced OOP DVD set. Gives me hope for Pandora's Box in the future!
