MATEWAN will be a day one purchase for me.

HAXAN I would buy during a B&N sale.

Spine 1,000 better be a massive Kurosawa box-set, Godzilla box-set, or Wong Kar-Wai collection. Fingers crossed!

Assuming that there's a sale in November, you shouldn't have to wait long for either.

Great line up. I'm in for all except When We Were Kings. I was just about to buy the DVD for Haxan at B&N. Haxan is a seminal horror film, up there with Vampyr.

Actually, Haxan is anything but fantasy. It documents how closed-minded puritanical misfits would label something that they didn't understand as evil. And then these unfortunate ones, believing they're "bad", would suppress their natural humanness causing them to actually become insane.

I'm not saying there wasn't or aren't those who practice sorcery, but most are often misunderstood.

Great to hear Criterion is digging further into the Paramount pre-50 titles not owned by Universal Television (at least the silent features). Some of these have already been issued in the UK by Masters of Cinema, so for the first time in a long time we have MoC titles issued here by Criterion. Interesting to see what they will do with THE LAST COMMAND.

I've always been of the opinion that Haxan plays both sides of the fence by devoting more of it's running time to the lurid illumination of demonic, Medieval woodcuts and paintings than debunking ignorance. I some ways it's more of an artful Dwain Esper film that spends an hour treating us adults-only exploitation, only to redeem itself as "educational" in the final act.

I do find all those things fascinating, and I appreciate that aspect of the film. Though my exposure to religious intolerance couldn't help but to soak up the theme I already spoke of.

I enjoy Haxan and will definitely be upgrading this one.

I'm stoked for 3 Silent Classics by Josef von Sternberg. I seriously almost picked up the Eureka copy of The Last Command(how did I leave the title out?) a few weeks ago but took it out of my cart at the last moment. Also, I still think were going to get a Godzilla set so everything is still good.

Just making sure there wasn't already a MoC collection of all three films that I wasn't aware of.

I'm not familiar with any of these titles, but most CC I get are usually blind buys. Haxan seems interesting as does Matewan... Wasn't worth the hubbub on here lol

Two of my favorite 80's films, Local Hero in September and Matewan in October.

Thank you Criterion!

Now, how about Albert Finney's tour de force Under the Volcano on Blu? And then maybe the Wonderful Sidney Pollack film, Havana from 1990?

I broke down and ordered Havana from Amazon DE a few months ago. The transfer is outstanding. On some scenes, I thought I was watching a 4k UHD disc. It deserves a decent release in North America.

I believe I've never seen a Rocha film but I'm all in for Naruse. Him and Imamura Shohei are under-represented on bd. I understand Naruse is barely known outside of Japan but Imamura is well known in the art-house circle. He won the Palme d'Or at Cannes more times than any other Japanese director. We need The Eel, Dr. Akagi, Black Rain etc etc to be released. And for Naruse I hope we get at least Mother, Floating Clouds and Lightning along with an upgrade of When a Woman Ascends the Stairs someday.

Of the new announcements I definitely will buy Haxan. I had the dvd but sold it when I was short of cash about 10 years ago. I couldn't afford the Godzilla box set if, or when, it's announced. I'd love it if they could put the two MST3K episodes on it. Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster with Joel and the Bots! "Do you see half of what I see?"

Haxan is a pretty great film and a welcome upgrade for Halloween season, definitely in for that.

The only other title I've seen is When We Were Kings and it's a very memorable documentary, excited for that one too.

Whatever #1000 ends up being it sounds like a biggie. Hopefully it's not Citizen Kane though as some have mentioned - I already have a deluxe set of that on blu-ray and it's beautiful.

Wow, I can't remember the last time I was all in on everything.

I've had When We Were Kings on my wishlist for years, that's huge.

The Sternberg set is an autobuy and Haxan and Matewan sound right up my alley.

Excellent month
