Nice to finally be able to retire my Josef von Sternberg set. Amazing set for anyone interested.
The trailer posted on Criterion looks fantastic. So if that's any indication...it should look amazing.

Under the Volcano would have been an excellent choice as well, given that whole 'day of the dead' thing.

Thank you Criterion!

Now, how about Albert Finney's tour de force Under the Volcano on Blu? And then maybe the Wonderful Sidney Pollack film, Havana from 1990?

I broke down and ordered Havana from Amazon DE a few months ago. The transfer is outstanding. On some scenes, I thought I was watching a 4k UHD disc. It deserves a decent release in North America.
I have been dying for an upgrade of Under The Volcano and Wise Blood! Give me more Huston on Blu!

How awesome would that be. It would be almost as cool as the Bergman box set. But I’d be kicking myself for having already bought Barry Lyndon

Finally, managed to watch Lola which I had DVRed last night and loved it, still have to sit down and watch Veronika Voss which I also recorded, TCM didn't show The Marriage of Maria Braun but I think there's a good chance down the line I will end up buying the BRD Trilogy.

Maybe a collection of all (or most) of Hitchcock’s American films in 4K? Or maybe something never on home video like Song of the South or Porgie & Bess? I’m not clamoring for either, but wouldn’t complain if they were released for those that do want them.

So I purchased High and Low the other day and watched it for the first time today. Loved the movie, but had a really difficult time watching it. Audio kept dropping out constantly, especially during loud scenes like the dance scene late in the movie. Has anyone else had this issue? Should I get a hold of Criterion for a replacement?

A longshot for sure, but I would love a proper re-release of:

Watched my copy a few days ago and it was fine so I'd contact them for a replacement.

We don't need one, the Blu ray we have from Funimation is probably the best we'll ever get and the transfer is a damn good one.

Default Matewan Mo’ Better

A gift, and an addition to Criterion, that is long overdue.

Every role in Matewan is exceptionally cast, and Sayles provides a master class with his direction of a film that should be required screening for every US high school student.

Quite frankly, if Criterion was serious about burnishing their brand, it would be a Sayles box set that posters would be clamoring for, and not Gojira, and I say that as a fan of both.

Just an opinion, but not only is Matewan head and shoulders above Blue Velvet and Do The Right Thing, two recent releases that are sure to be at the top of Criterion sales, but Sayles filmography is superior to both Lee and Lynch, and once again, I say that as a fan of both.

Not to mention, wasn't a 4K edition recently announced?

I feel like Sayles is a favorite among old dads who love reading American Civil War books lol. I like him, but I prefer directors who are a bit more...punk?

Well, Sayles was making, and defining, indie film, long before Lee and Lynch, so you could consider Sayles a godfather of punk.

Speaking of punk, neither Lee nor Lynch have delivered as hard hitting, true to life film as Matewan, although Lee has directed a few excellent documentaries.

But both are far better at marketing themselves, I’ll give them that.

I believe Arbelos has the rights to all of Tarr's films, at least from The Man From London and back. Eagerly anticipating their restoration of Sátántangó later this year.

I liked Matewan, but would have much preferred City of Hope, or perhaps Lone Star. YMMV

David Lynch doesn't really make true-to-life films, though, does he? That's not his schtick and never has been, so I'm not sure how that's a valid comparison or even what prompted it.

And Sayles most definitely did not define indie film - whatever that means; Cassavetes surely beat them both - "long before" Lynch. They both started making films in the late 1970s. Eraserhead was years in the making and graced the screens at least one year before anything Sayles wrote or directed.

From a certain point of view, “Mulholland Drive” boils down to being that sometimes all dreams don’t come true just like in the movies. And in the end, isn’t that true-to-life?

I interpreted "true to life" as based on real-life events, given the film that sparked the debate. Even the biopic The Elephant Man has a dreamily surreal quality to it. The exception might be The Straight Story, but I still find the comparison with Sayles, who has totally distinct approach and interests, baffling.
