It is the perfect example of a serious dropout in quality in all aspects. So much it sticks out from the curated titles (except for the whole filmographies of living directors). This is a further precedent, the fan phenomena impulsed by the anonymity of internet and fake trends will make some fervent (suspiciously) loyal brand users to attack me and say how influential they have been. But their motto is long dead. The company is no longer releasing as much diverse important titles, and those who care about cinema know the joys of discovering something new resides on diversity, not big boxsets.

I know it's a business, and im not entitled to say release this or that. They will release what they want that makes them earn cash. But see, other consumers will need to see this fake veil of demand and let them know they're abandoning the diverse classic standards (those with academic status) they did for years to satisfy the democratic cult retro trends that invade all boutique labels.
Yeah, I think it all started to go downhill when Criterion released King Kong....

I wasn’t asking about the movies, I was wondering why the hate thrown Criterion’s way for not including English dubs. English dubs of foreign films are universally terrible.

I’m up for low-budget sci-fi with dodgy effects as much as the next person, but I can imagine the novelty wears off quickly slogging your way through 15 of them.

A few of the US versions are re-edited and change the storyline slightly, adding new scenes, etc..A lot of people grew up only with those versions and love them. There's also some entertaining dialogue in many of the dubs too.

Yeah, I like to break them up a little bit, I think I will watch All Monsters Attack and then follow it up with Hamlet (1948)....

A whole bunch of other people would have complained why it wasn’t a Godzilla boxset.

For the most part, I enjoy the posts and posters in this thread, but there are definitely some instances of buffoonish snobbery rearing its ugly head. You're going to find cases of that on any Criterion forum though. This thread is actually one of the better ones...
Game of Thrones threads I hear are especially cordial.

Did you guys like the dual-format releases while they were doing them? What are your preferences between the standard releases and dual-format? How many dual do you have? I just counted my dual sets and have 27 of them. I only dislike them when the package has been made much bigger to accommodate the extra disc(s).

Had issues with the keepcase editions and one of the disks coming unmoored in transit and arriving loose.

Happened pretty frequently.

Had that with a couple. Now that they are snugly tucked in on the shelves, that hasn't happened again.

Because Godzilla films are like kung-fu films or spaghetti westerns. Pure entertainment that's not too taxing on the brain. Save the subs for the high-brow fare.

Nope. Hated them. Hated being stuck with redundant DVDs that I'd never use. Hated that some releases such as Nashville were stuck with big clunky packages to accommodate the extra discs. I got rid of the few I had and replaced them with the subsequent blu-ray only re-releases. Technically I still have one (Thief) but I sold the DVD loose on E-bay a while back.

Criterion's dual-format releases were an abomination and would be mercifully expunged from memory if it weren't for the few painful reminders cluttering up my shelves.

I liked the dual format releases. My dad and some of my friends even, still haven't upgraded to Blu-ray so it made showing them a movie much easier than disconnecting and reconnecting players.

Has anyone heard anything about the status of Eclipse's Oshima's Outlaw Sixties? It's not available on Amazon, Best Buy, Deep Discount ("backorder" status), or Barnes and Noble online (and apparently, only a few stores still have stock). Criterion still has it in stock on its website, but I'm wondering if it's going out of print or just between pressings.

I did notice that many of the dual-format releases go for a nice resale price on a few sites. It seems like you can get your money back and more if you really want to get rid of and replace them.

Bulky releases exist even without dual pack so I don't understand the complains.

Yes, and I hate those too. I went out of my way to buy the Rock Box just so I could get A Hard Day's Night in a proper plastic case instead of an oversized digipack. The Nashville and Picnic At Hanging Rock re-releases were in plastic cases so the only reason they were in large digipacks was because they were dual releases.
