The dual format releases were an attempt by Criterion to have one set price for every release. Some people liked it, but most didn't. The biggest complaints were from DVD only buyers who didn't want to pay the additional money for a format they wouldn't use. So Criterion was forced to abandon this and release DVD and Blu-Rays separately.
I'm sure these issues are part of the thought process that Criterion is undertaking in relation to whether they should have a UHD release. |

Just to show that this is, indeed, a big realease, here are two articles by widely read websites that don't normally cover home video releases, much less Criterion blu-rays. These both came across my Facebook news feed in the past 5 minutes. The latter (Brooklyn Vegan) doesn't even usually cover movies (it's a music site).

I do. I like the charm of rubber suits and miniatures because they are so much fun and creative to look at. I take them over the boring CG that we get in Marvel, DC, Transformers and Star Wars. Hollywood big budget movies all look the same to me because I feel like they have no style to them. Give me cheesy B movie special effects any day. |

Trying to decide between preordering the Godzilla set off Diabolik or taking the chance and waiting a few days for Barnes and Noble. With the Bergman set, I got lucky that they were able to order one from the Warehouse for me right before it went OOP until late February and I’m worried about another situation happening like that again.

I am personally very excited about the release and think it fits in perfectly with some of the other fun and campy Criterion releases such as Gojira (obviously), Police Story, Repo Man, Fear and Loathing in las Vegas, and Scanners. |

The Film Forum (in NYC) has released their newest repertory schedule, and most notable for Criterion is a screening of Ozu's Tokyo Twilight, sourced from a 4K restoration.
![]() They also have some other incredible films lined up too, including a 3 week engagement highlighting "Tales of Downtown Tokyo". https://filmforum.org/do-not-enter-o...l123_FINAL.pdf (PDF File) |

But I did notice there was a period after they stopped doing Dual Format releases where they got cheap and we were getting less extras on releases and cheap leaflets instead which I’m assuming was a result of having to find a way to cut back somehow. We also lost the lower tier, $30 price releases Criterion used to do so I wish they would have kept at it for that reason. |
