The dual format releases were an attempt by Criterion to have one set price for every release. Some people liked it, but most didn't. The biggest complaints were from DVD only buyers who didn't want to pay the additional money for a format they wouldn't use. So Criterion was forced to abandon this and release DVD and Blu-Rays separately.

I'm sure these issues are part of the thought process that Criterion is undertaking in relation to whether they should have a UHD release.

Just to show that this is, indeed, a big realease, here are two articles by widely read websites that don't normally cover home video releases, much less Criterion blu-rays. These both came across my Facebook news feed in the past 5 minutes. The latter (Brooklyn Vegan) doesn't even usually cover movies (it's a music site).

I don't think this has anything to do with the fact that it's Godzilla. These articles would have been written no matter what had been chosen simply because the movie would be Criterion's 1000th release.

Amazon has informed me that my Bergman set will be delivered tomorrow. Sweet. I have not seen most of these movies before. Any recommendations as to the order they should be watched?

Same. I think the general public probably cares more about a Godzilla box set as opposed to Criterions 1000 release

Gizmodo/io9 covered it too, and it's no doubt because its Godzilla, and not spine 1000

I got into film because of Godzilla. I was 2 and half years old when I first saw a Godzilla movie. It got me into other Sci-Fi and Horror movies that I would try to watch on TV or at Blockbuster as a kid. When I got older, I decided to check out Akira Kuorsawa movies after hearing that Honda was good friends with Kurosawa (And that his movies are legendary). Also, I got into anime thanks to Godzilla because the Sci-Fi channel aired both Godzilla and anime back in the 90s.

I do. I like the charm of rubber suits and miniatures because they are so much fun and creative to look at. I take them over the boring CG that we get in Marvel, DC, Transformers and Star Wars. Hollywood big budget movies all look the same to me because I feel like they have no style to them. Give me cheesy B movie special effects any day.

Trying to decide between preordering the Godzilla set off Diabolik or taking the chance and waiting a few days for Barnes and Noble. With the Bergman set, I got lucky that they were able to order one from the Warehouse for me right before it went OOP until late February and I’m worried about another situation happening like that again.

Just picked up my Bergman Cinema set... What a sight to behold. This is possibly the most beautiful boxset I have ever seen. I cannot wait to explore many of these titles that I have never seen.

Agreed. Godzilla has a pretty massive following and this set will surely end up in people's collection that have never heard of Criterion; it is a pretty great move from the company and will be great exposure. I remember Walmart carrying Fear and Loathing in stores when Criterion first released the dvd and it was a huge success. This will be along the same lines I think.

I am personally very excited about the release and think it fits in perfectly with some of the other fun and campy Criterion releases such as Gojira (obviously), Police Story, Repo Man, Fear and Loathing in las Vegas, and Scanners.

The set includes a suggested "festival" program schedule for watching the films, which I'd recommend if you are new to Bergman. If you want to watch in chronological order, our fellow member Namuhana posted how to do that in the dedicated thread for the set:

Thanks. I think I'll use the recommended festival schedule. That seems to be popular and a good way if getting the most out of the films.

Loved them. Cannot complain about getting more for the same price. Also, it gives me peace of mind to have a backup copy of the film. In situations when I do not have access to a Blu-ray player, I can still watch have the film and/or extras. Besides, I feel in most cases extras don't usually necessitate HD quality to be experienced.

The Film Forum (in NYC) has released their newest repertory schedule, and most notable for Criterion is a screening of Ozu's Tokyo Twilight, sourced from a 4K restoration.

They also have some other incredible films lined up too, including a 3 week engagement highlighting "Tales of Downtown Tokyo".

I could give or take them. I didn’t mind the bulkier packaging and it was convenient at the time also having a DVD copy.

But I did notice there was a period after they stopped doing Dual Format releases where they got cheap and we were getting less extras on releases and cheap leaflets instead which I’m assuming was a result of having to find a way to cut back somehow. We also lost the lower tier, $30 price releases Criterion used to do so I wish they would have kept at it for that reason.

I inquired about a UK release of the Godzilla box set, and this was the reply:

Quote:
Hi,

The GODZILLA box set on Criterion.com consists of Region A Blu-Rays.

We are aiming to have a Region B version of the GODZILLA: THE SHOWA-ERA FILMS, 1954–1975 set released in November.

The best way to stay in the loop regarding UK Region B releases is via the following sites:
Amazon UK (http://amazon.co.uk/criterion)
ZOOM (https://www.zoom.co.uk/category/crit...ion_on_blu_ray)

Best,
Jon
So good news for us collectors who live in Region B territories! I do have a multi-region player, but prefer Region B where I can get it.

Bought my copy of the US release in time for King of the Monsters 2 months ago so guess I’ll be selling it!
