Don't go breaking my heart studios and not release this.

I noticed Fellini's The White Sheik will be screened at The Film Forum here in nyc, sourced from a new 4K restoration. I know Criterion's DVD is OOP, but it's rumored that they may have gotten some/all of their Fellini titles back, perhaps for a box set.

I've gotten employee confirmation that the Barnes & Noble 50% off sale begins next Friday, November 1st. They don't know when the sale will end, but I'd imagine it would be the normal four-week length.

If that's the case, I'll be on the Mainland and will be able to go to a well stocked B&N. I will try to show more restraint this time.

Sigh.....time to get THAT list going.

Can't wait! And then there's the Crit 50%. And the fact that the new management is going with the 40% sale bodes well for it sticking with the 50% Crit sale.

Bodes well? Apparently, the Criterion sale is happening starting next Friday.
It bodes well for the 40% off sale, I think you mean.

Last night, TCM aired WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS, and it had the official Criterion logo, followed by the official Janus Films logo. Print was widescreen and looked great, but was English-dubbed.

I wonder if Criterion also has access to that film's putative prequel, FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD?

Best guess 12/17 through the end of Christmas Eve this year.
Great time to pick up the WAC (esp the TV and multidisc sets) and Universal/Sony MOD titles that rarely go on sale.
I’ll have to remember this. I’ve started watching out for the WAC sales on their site, the 4 for $44 deal-but that typically doesn’t include releases less than six months old. And there are a lot of new issues I want-The Thin Man, Jezebel, The Letter, the first V miniseries, The Bad and the Beautiful for starters. That will come in very handy.

I think they meant that it bodes well for the Criterion sales going forward. We weren’t sure if B&N were going to continue doing Criterion sales after the corporate changes. Some feared this next one might be the last one.

I keep telling myself I’ll only buy 5 or 6 more during the Barnes & Noble sale, but we’ll see how that goes. As I clear movies off my DVR, my want list just keeps bigger. I’m finishing Things to Come right now, and would like to grab it soon. I’m starting Fassbinder’s BRD Trilogy tonight, having both Lola and Veronica Voss ready to go-that should give a pretty good indication of how far behind I am, as they’re in my signature.

I have Kuroneko, Sullivan’s Travels, The Lady Eve, The Heiress, Here Comes Mr. Jordan, Blow-Up, Personal Shopper, Z, 45 Years and Othello to view before buying.

Yeah. I need to get my butt moving. The Lady Eve will be a re-watch, and I’m going to pay special attention to the quality of the film elements. I just refuse to believe that a blu-ray-worthy copy cannot be found. It might be wishful thinking, but I won’t give up hope.

I'm surprise the Criterion Channel has Herschell Gordon Lewis movies. Then again, I'm not complaining.

Moonrise

This was stunning, top tier film noir in my book. It really shouldn’t work, Dane Clark is fairly one note and weak in the lead role and I didn’t quite buy the initial development of his and Gail Russell’s relationship. But it still really works despite those aspects because all of the other roles outside of Clark are performed with sensitivity and nuance and counterbalance his one note performance to achieve a probably unintended but thematically coherent effect of Clark’s character always raging against everything and everyone. Of course, this is all aided by the much lauded mood and atmosphere created by the expressionist mise en scene, and it really is something to behold, particularly on Criterion’s stunning blu ray. The opening alone should be more famous for having one of the all time great edits but Borzage’s work throughout is first rate (my favorite scenes in this regard were the beginning, the Ferris wheel scene, the raccoon hunt which ends with Clark and the raccoon atop the tree and the impromptu dance in Blackwater mansion).

A Matter Of Life and Death

I like it, it has too many clever ideas and inspired visuals to ignore, but to me, relatively, this is the Archers’ weakest work out of their more famous collaborations. The central love story that almost everyone in the movie is trying to preserve is just not given sufficient screen time to carry the emotional weight that it is supposed to bear. Might just be me but it needed more scenes showing the developing love between Niven and Hunter’s characters for it to really hit home.

Still, there is plenty to like with my favorite part being the introduction to Livesey’s character in his observatory where he watches the town in a god like manner. The heavenly scenes, in particular the way the trial is conducted, also cleverly reflect the ‘logical fantasticness’ that is mentioned by Livesey in his diagnosis of Niven.

Criterion’s blu is a stunner.

Rumble Fish

Firstly, this is a massive upgrade over Eureka’s disc, the DNR+EE looks is replaced with something far more filmic.

As for the movie, this is my second watch and I got into it a lot more this time around. The style is still the biggest takeaway, and while it also does get in the way of the emotional core of the story at times, it contributes so much to the mood of the whole thing that it is quite likely that the movie would have worked even less in a more conventional style (eg The Outsiders).

Also, love the score and sound design.
