I am over the moon with this Paris is Burning announcement -- been waiting for yeeeeeeears for it to be released on Blu anywhere in the world, so a Criterion debut is excellent news.

That cover though... I'm not usually a stickler for cover art, but out of all the iconic and colorful imagery this film contains, to go with a black & white still with block text is an odd choice. The original poster art would have been much better.

I'm quite happy it's getting a release again, since there's no way I'm forking over 200+ on a DVD

Me too. Was just looking at The Face of Another and hoping for an upgrade. Wish they would upgrade and put out the entire box set of three movies with Pitfall and Woman in the Dunes. Edit: wait. It looks like like the box set is OOP. *sad face*

Anyways, saw that they also had the Gaudí film and got interested in who he is.

I saw Roma in theaters twice because I was afraid Netflix would never allow it on physical media. I'm really glad to see it available....and on Criterion!

It's a beautiful film. It and Cold War are in my pantheon of great, modern B/W films (I've also added The Lighthouse, which I loved but won't recommend to the unprepared. Will Criterion get it, too?)

My big LG OLED screen renders B/W just fine from a blu-ray in my Playstation, so I wouldn't let the lack of a 4K disc hold me back. I can't wait to see Roma at home.

My only problem with the film is that I'm getting slightly bored wth Cuaron's madonna complex. I'm ready for something from him that doesn't focus on a mother, and one that's generally nurturing, at that. But with its beauty and its portrayal of a specific time and place, I'll sit through Roma several more times.

Why won't you recommend The Lighthouse to the unprepared?

Is Cold War better than Ida(the director's previous film)?

Cuaron having a Madonna complex is not something I really see. He’s made films with flawed female characters too (Great Expectations, Y Tu Mama Tambien, the one with that sneaky little brown-noser Hermione Granger...)

Almost all of the extras from the Teshigahara box-set are on the Woman in the Dunes Blu-ray release so it is almost as if Criterion never had plans to upgrade the box-set and just focused on upgrading Woman in the Dunes. It is the same situation with the Louis Malle box-set and Au revoir les enfants.

Ida is better in my opinion. Cold War is still excellent though, and had incredible cinematography. Joanna Kulig is absolutely mesmerizing in the lead role too.

Unfortunately, at this point in time, The Lighthouse is incredibly unlikely since it's with A24, who does home video distribution through Lionsgate (and Lionsgate notoriously doesn't license their library out to third-party distributors like Criterion, Shout, Arrow, etc.).

I'm trying to get better at matching people's taste with movies when I recommend things. The Lighthouse would be a challenge to many of the people I hang around with, from it's being B/W to the two-character cast to the mythic/supernatural elements. I don't know how many would even notice or care about aspect ratio, lol. Anyway, I'm try not to over-recommend movies like this to the Downton crowd. Or for that matter, to a lot of Marvel fans I know (one of whom called it pretentious). Nothing against the film -- I loved it -- but it's not everyone's cup of tea.

How could i have forgotten Ida! I did like Cold War better because I was more engaged with the story. But what a fine film!

I have a basic Sony BD player (with region-free mod), and a Toshiba 40" from about six years ago - and B&W looks stunning. In fact, one of my main BD collecting interests is B&W film shot in CinemaScope aspect ratios - so I really do need to get on and watch Roma!

Good point! I should have refined that comment. I see the Madonna Syndrome more in stuff when he's had a significant role in the writing. I'd put Y Tu Mama in that group, though, since it's at least partly about the boys' idealization.

He wasn't involved in writing the other two (and I wonder if that's why I'd completely forgotten he'd done them). It'd be interesting to see him create more Hermiones who don't have to be mothers who have lost their child (yes, I was floored by that bit of unnecessary background in Gravity despite the great visuals).

But he's a total master of direction, so I'll happily rewatch Roma several times.

Since I haven't got the Second Run versions, I'm super excited for the Zeman set.

I agree 100%. A perfect chance to get in on the UHD market for them and frankly establishing themselves as the 'top gun' in the releasing business. Besides the extras, this is potentially a downgrade in PQ from the Netflix stream.. Definitely a lost opportunity. The Pasolini on the other hand is a must.

Just got back from seeing a new independent Russian/American film called Give Me Liberty at the 3 Rivers Film Festival (3RFF).

Absolutely. Blown. Away.

WOW.

Here's the trailer for anyone who's interested. I think this could easily fit in the Criterion Collection too.
