Best Blind Buys (in order):

-Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles
-3 Women
-Death in Venice
(Honorable Mention: The Soft Skin)

Worst Blind Buys (in no particular order):

-The Squid and the Whale
-Funny Games (1997)
-Life During Wartime

Those are my picks for Criterion Blus I've blind bought, then either loved or hated...By the way, I didn't make my picks based on the quality of the transfer, only the content and plot of the film itself.

Please feel free to join in, and list your top 3 best and worst Criterion Blind Buys Blus!!
This is interesting as I just did a poll like this just a couple of weeks ago (asking people to list their most regretful blind-buy purchase).

For me its:

Best blind-buys:
1. My Own Private Idaho
2. Before the Rain
3. The Black Stallion / All That Jazz (tie)

Worst blind-buys:
1. Eating Raoul
2. World on a Wire
3. La Jetée/Sans Soleil

I saw it last week at the Inverness Film Festival. Last film I can think of that was 1:33 was Grand Budapest Hotel. Without spoiling the superb film though:

I simply cannot make lists of Best and Worst blind-buys, as there are just too many films which I haven't gotten around to viewing yet. Once I've seen the vast majority of them, I will be comfortable making some small, short list on both ends.

I have kinda played it safe with my blind buys from Criterion so far. I’ve purchased them based on my love of the director’s other work:

Best:
1. L’Eclisse - I had seen and loved many Antonioni before purchasing this one blind so I knew what I was getting into.

2. (Tie) Barcelona/Last Days of Disco - I bought the Whit Stillman Trilogy after previously viewing Love & Friendship and Metropolitan. I had fallen in love with Whit Stillman’s dialogue and characters. These two movies gave me more of what I loved. It hurts a bit that so many are naming Whit blind buys in the worst category these past two rounds of ‘name your worst blind buy.’ Taste is subjective and these movies align perfectly with mine.

3. Three Colors: White - I bought the Three Colors set after only seeing Blue & Red (we watched them out of order in a film course not my choice). White was a lot of fun and not at all what I expected.

Worst:
I don’t actually have any worst at this time.

Still need to watch my latest blind buys from the flash sale - Le Amiche & Identification of a Women (continuing my journey through Antonioni) and Ride the Whirlwind (I had watched the Shooting before and really dug it). Next flash sale maybe I’ll blind buy out of my comfort zone so that I can have a higher chance of hating them.

Best blind-buys:
All That Heaven Allows (I think I probably would have gone through life never experiencing a Sirk film if not for ATHA's association with Fassbinder/Ali: Fear Eats the Soul).
Sweet Smell of Success
Life is Sweet

Worst blind-buys: Valley of the Dolls; blind-buy was prompted by the promise of 'so bad, it's good'; what I got was nothing of the sort, but tepid and dreary casting/acting/scripting -- I'm convinced a movie made by committee, sorta' like Star Wars: the Rise of Skywalker. Wings of Desire did nothing for me; not surprised to learn that the co-scenarist is a poet. I'm guessing Personal Shopper was written by Assayas during a quick lunch break; though an actress not named Kristen Stewart might have been able to salvage the movie.

I've only ever done about 10 Criterion blind buys, don't do too many blind buys in general. If i'm interested in the movie & haven't seen it, i will find a way to see it first before deciding.

Best Blind Buys

1. Limelight - i love Chaplin & this was the only one i hadn't seen. I think it's one of his best. My 2nd favourite of his after Modern Times.

2. War & Peace - i loved every minute of it, just blown away by the scale of it. One to watch on the projector only though.

3. Yi Yi - i found it to be really engaging for a 3 hour movie where not a lot happens. Beautiful to look at too, it's a movie i can get lost in.

Don't have any blind buys that i regret buying.

Worst blind buy for me is probably between Elevator to the Gallows and It Happened One Night. Not that I think they were bad, just not as good as the other films I've bought.

Of the 241 Criterion's that I now have, I'd say at least 25% were blind buys. I have a lot of faith in buying them that way because I've so rarely been disappointed. Extremely difficult to list only 3 that I've loved, but here goes:

Grand Slams -

Chungking Express
The Piano Teacher
Detour

I'm going to sneak in The Marriage of Maria Braun even though it was included with The BRD Trilogy, and I already knew that I wanted the other two films. And it may be my favorite of the three!

Not listing anything for "worst." Maybe a couple that I'll be slow to come back to, but nothing I've hated.

At first I was going to go off on a rant about Elevator to the Gallows being the worst blind buy, but after reading the whole thing I thought that you must have bought some amazing movies.

Got Shooting/Ride the Whirlwind being a Nicholson fan. They were okay I guess, but I don’t think I’ve rewatched them... I try to rent instead of blind buying if I can

Best was probably Au Hasard Balthazar
