I finished Now, Voyager and I have to say it’s just a most perfect disc. Transfer, extras, booklet and the movie itself of course. It’s shaping as one of my top ten of 2019. A must have for Bette Davis fans.

I just watched Fanny and Alexander for the first time the other night.
Usually when I watch something bleak I love a bleak ending, but I was wanting a happy ending with this one. When the children [Show spoiler] I watched the television cut. I just felt that was the way to go. Afterward I read that the theatrical cut edits out quite a bit of the fantasy sequences, so I made the right decision. How funny to see this discussion going on because I was coming here to post the following: I've been trying to remember which version I have watched and can't seem to figure it out. Is there any dead giveaways that would help jolt my memory?

Currently 3.5 hours into the Fanny and Alexander mini series 5+ hour cut from the Bergman box set. Completely enthralled by the scope and beauty of it all. Almost impossible to turn off as it’s paced perfectly.
I held off watching F & A knowing it’s such a heavy hitter, but to anyone on the fence, dive in. It works especially well now that we’re approaching the holidays. |

I agree! I also have a connection with it. It was one of the first movies o watched after my father died. I was older than the kids, and I had a less than good relationship with my father, but i still felt a connection to movie and the story and has remained one of my favorites of all time.

The other day I saw Medium Cool (on the Eureka BD, but I thought I could share my views on the film here as well). I was looking forward to the movie, but also very apprehensive because some of the 60's stuff was a little too avant-garde for my liking. I mean I like parts of Blow-Up, but the lead character played by Hemmings is such a dick I can't stand the thought watching it again.
MC is set in the chaos of Vietnam era political protests, in which Robert Forster (whom I have only seen before in Jackie Brown, I think) plays a TV reporter interested in capturing topical content, be it a violent accident or a black cabbie being hassled by the police after he turns in 10K in cash a customer left in his car. We see Rob enjoying a bohemian affair with a swinging model (one scene is devoted to showing them running naked through rooms). Then he gets involved with a poor single mother bringing up a spunky son. These are the main characters but an equally important part is played by the socio-political spirit of that period, of young people coming together to form part of a movement, to protest against the establishment and what it stands for. Director Haskell Wexler, a brilliant cinematographer himself, captures this zeitgeist without ideological judgment. He is simply conveying the simmering sentiment and uncertainty of the period. A lot of the crowd footage is palpably convincing. Apparently Wexler was shooting footage at an actual demonstration which transformed into a riot of protestors vs the police, and the ensuing pandemonium is scarily well-represented. Viewing the footage you can imagine how things might be for current-day Hong Kong or any other place where the government and the people are at loggerheads. This was a powerful film, worth returning to. ![]() |

I’m sure it’s just down to the elements that (thankfully) survive, but knowing they were presented in HD I’m a little disappointed by the appearance of I Was Born, But... and A Straightforward Boy on Good Morning. With the lack of clarity to the image, it looks closer to DVD quality than Blu-ray. But I expect it’s still better than any DVD release and it looks better in motion than in still frames.
