In order to fully appreciate the film I suggest you do some reading up on the actual incident that was used in the film and learn about the reality of it. I'm surprised you don't know what it was because it has often been considered something of a watershed moment in American history, the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago. 1968 was filled with such momentous incidents, but everything came to a head in late August of that year in Chicago when war protestors clashed with local police who were instructed by the Mayor to "shoot to kill." Here's a good background piece on it:

I watched The Story of Temple Drake last night and thoroughly enjoyed this albeit short Pre-Code Film. I admired Miriam Hopkins strong performance of the title character and loved the German Expressionistic Cinematography. One of the extras showed clips from the 1931 version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and I'm optimistic that Criterion will eventually release this Pre-Code gem as well.

Well I'm from India, so I'm not clued into American history as much. I only know that the 60's were a time of political turmoil, especially post JFK's assassination. The booklet on the Eureka release contains a preface of a massive government commissioned report made on the incident and is pretty damning in itself of the attitude and action taken by the policemen, often against innocent bystanders who had no part in the protest marches.

Whoops, I didn't know you were from India, didn't even see that it says under your avatar you are located there. I'm so used to encountering Americans who don't know much about history that I jumped to conclusions. Sorry about that.

I have always believed that if there's one single subject that will help a person really appreciate films more it's a working knowledge of world history. Not just film history, but all history. That's something that seems to be lacking in a lot of filmmakers these days, much less audiences. Now having said that, please don't quiz me on Indian history!

Janus tweeted a little tease of a deleted scene from Eyes Wide Shut. Looks like we might be getting another Christmas movie in the collection!!!

"Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" - Despite the title, not a Christmas movie. Decent, but down-beat film set in a Japanese WWII prison camp. Not exactly jingling-all-the-way.

Posted this in the corresponding forum but it applies here as well. The Godzilla box set sold...

$3,892,866 revenue
and was ranked 7th for the week, based on units sold.

I feel like they’re holding onto that (as well as IL BIDONE) for the Fellini 100 box.
