The Lumière Film Festival showed the movie this year and states "Restauration 4K en 2018 (première mondiale à Berlin) par Mosfilm à partir des négatifs originaux." (considering the festival, I tend to trust their info).
Also, Janus tweeted in July 19 it was a 4K restoration. The Berlinale talks of a 2K DCP, but it's not unheard of 4K restorations only being available in 2K DCPs (that's the case for Donnie Darko). Considering the conflicting information, which reminds me of the one around the Ozu color movies, I guess the scan was done in 4K but the restoration in 2K. In any case though, it's most certainly the same restoration. |

The DVD already looks superb but is mostly bare-bones (iirc) and it is visually such an amazing film I think I will have to upgrade. All the other March titles are appealing to me, but importing to the UK is now an expensive business so I will have to hope for some RB releases.

I'll have to give it another try; I thought it was terrible.

In the late-90s/early-00s, even as Criterion was already releasing titles on DVD, there was a set of 20 DVDs released by Janus Films through Image, of which The 47 Ronin was one. Six of them were previously released on laserdisc by Criterion or Voyager, eight of them later released on DVD (and some of those on BD) by Criterion. Here's a list: Blithe Spirit ³ Bulldog Drummond Escapes / Bulldog Drummond's Secret Police Forever and a Day The 47 Ronin Parts 1 & 2 I Was a Teenage Zombie The Great Chase The Human Condition I: No Greater Love ³ The Human Condition II: Road to Eternity ³ The Human Condition III: A Soldier's Prayer ³ The Inland Sea ¹ The Legend of Rudolph Valentino The Love Goddesses ¹ Mahler The Mikado ³ Mon Oncle Antoine ³ Odd Man Out ² ³ This Sporting Life ² ³ Tiger Bay Waltz of the Toreadors ² World's Greatest Animation ¹ ¹ released on LD by Voyager ² released on LD by Criterion ³ released later on DVD by Criterion There was also one other title announced by Image/Janus, Caesar and Cleopatra, but never released. It later appeared as part of the Eclipse set George Bernard Shaw on Film. |

For me, Showboat is the bigger one. I suppose it's easy for me to say because I have the Twilight Time release of Leave Her to Heaven, but I really like Showboat more.

Seems rather weird that Bamboozled and Showboat are scheduled after Black History Month. Last edited by jayembee; 12-17-2019 at 07:36 PM. |

Though I can't help but feel like a outsider or "Karen" type (look up Karen meme) is going to go ballistic or something. Again comparing it to the Great Dictator cover they did. Which did depict Hitler but in a way that would not upset everyone. Don't get me wrong, I completely 100% understand the point and I'm 99.999% sure Spike Lee approved this cover himself. But still, I can't help but wonder..... Does anyone think that Criterion's going to get complaints for this, or is this just me? |
