Well, if that was "the problem", Criterion had a far simpler and cheaper solution to that at hand, as well.

Actually, for the three disc (1 Blu-ray + 2 DVDs) releases they didn't. The 3-disc Scanavo case wasn't available until the last few dual-format releases. (and for the record, they shouldn't have stopped releasing in dual-format. I don't understand why they caved.)

You know that digipack and Scanavo aren't the only two packaging options in the world, right? Somehow pretty much every other distributor manages to put together 3-disc releases... almost like it's not that big a challenge!

I won't be double dipping either except for films that are my favorite. For example, I'd grab a UHD of Seven Samurai, assuming there is a significant improvement over the Blu-Ray. But for most of my collection, both Criterion and non-Criterion, I will not be upgrading unless (1) the film is one of my favorites and (2) the UHD shows an improvement in picture quality.

Yes, but they weren't going to start using the standard Blu-ray cases for 3-disc sets.

(1) For me, it has to be a favorite for me to buy it at all.

(2) 99% do.

This is...very wrong. On several levels.

For the past few years I've tried to limit my purchases to favorites as well. But, can something really be considered a favorite if you watch it once every few years? As my collection grows, I couldn't possibly watch all of them once a year. But there are certain titles that I will watch several times a year. Those are my favorite favorites.

Speaking of Dead Man, and as a desire to circumvent the boring UHD discussion here, does anyone else feel that this movie, and many other Jarmouch movies are strongly indebted to both The Hit (1984) and Wim Wenders early movies?

Semi-competent /quasi cool bad guys, solo guitar score, ironic violence, Robby Muller.

I like all of them, but when I saw The Hit, it seems like that was the seed of so much late 80s indie cinema.

I had no idea Criterion had so many titles on iTunes, and most of them seem to be on sale for $9.99 today. Obviously not the bigger studio titles from Disney and Sony, but there are a small handful I'm considering (The Player, The War Room, Time Bandits). The one title I really wanted in digital (Gimme Shelter) isn't available though. Bummer.

Yeah, everyone has to find their own place to draw the line. The point I was going for is that if I'm going to buy something, it means I like it enough to want to have the best available version.

Haven’t seen The Hit.

But the Wim Wenders influence on JJ is pretty apparent.

...at least to me.

In an interview at the Lincoln Center for Dead Man, he says he was thinking of Eric Clapton's score from The Hit when he considered using Neil Young for the soundtrack.

The real reason that Criterion stopped the dual format releases was nothing to do with blu-ray collectors. It was DVD collectors, and there are still many of them out there as anyone who has watched a closet video will know, who objected to paying more money for a DVD because it came with a blu-ray which they had no intention of watching anyway particularly as Criterion releases as seen to be pricey to begin with.

And personally, as a blu-ray collector I was irritated at being stuck with 2 extra DVDs half the time that I didn't need or want particularly when they came in larger sized packaging to accommodate them.

If Criterion do start going down the UHD route I speculate it would be simpler to do blu-ray / UHD dual releases simply because they won't need multiple discs to get all of the features on there like they did with DVDs and they can fit both discs in a single, regular sized plastic case.

It looks like Arrow's Alejandro Jodorowsky boxset is UK only. I hope Criterion could do their own Alejandro Jodorowsky boxset for the R1 market.

I've been waiting for a blu ray upgrade, but maybe I'll just bite the bullet and watch it in SD. I notice that it's streaming on the Criterion Channel.
